THESIS WORK
Writing
Results interpretation
11Starting your thesis starting literature
- Knowledge of literature is important when
starting up experiments - Start soon enough with looking for literature,
e.g. Web of Science - Journals electronic, ALLW,
- Books see our library
- When a book is taken, fill out the white card
at the back of the book and put it in place of
the book
12Experimental Work
- Where to work on your thesis?
- PC-room
- There are 3 computers available for the students
- Internet access for portable computers
- Every student has 2 personal drawers
13Experimental Work
- Where to work on your thesis?
- Laboratory
- Everybody gets a part of a lab table and drawer
- A badge, needed for entering the lab, will be
provided by the secretary
14Experimental Work
When to work on your thesis?
- Between 8.30 and 18.00
- When you want to work later take care that the
door is locked when you leave - Important - the building closes at 8 pm
(6 pm in weekend) - - never work alone in the lab
15Experimental Work
Manage your data!
- The use of a lab note book to write down
EVERYTHING is suggested, especially date and
conditions of each experiment - Keep every result/outprint (Chromatograms/integrat
ions/output/) even if these data are already
processed on PC - Make back ups!!!
16Experimental Work
Use of chemicals
- Make use of the hood for solvent manipulations
- Label each solution with your name, date and
description - All solvents have to be collected in the waste
bottles (chlorinated next to non-chlorinated
solvents) - When waste bottles are full, they need to be
emptied in the appropriate containers in the lab
at the 4th floor - After use, put the chemicals to their appropriate
place
17Experimental Work
Use of gas bottles
- In the beginning, ask for help to Theo or one of
the PhD students - If a bottle is empty, warn Theo so that theres
always a stock of gas bottles
18Experimental Work
Safety in the lab
- No tubing or cables on the ground
- Take care on stability and safety of your
experimental set-up - Lab coat, handkerchiefs, lab glasses
19Experimental Work
Clean up
- General principles
- clean up everything after use
- after use of material, screwdrivers, glassware,
clean it and put it back - At the back of the lab green glass bin for
broken glass - Every Friday, lab tables have to be clean!
- Big clean up twice a year
- Evelien De Bel is the severe security and
sanitary manager of the lab
20Follow up of the thesis work
- Personal guidance by supervisor
- Monthly meeting with Prof. Van Langenhove, Prof.
Dewulf and supervisor - Report to Prof. Van Langenhove, Prof. Dewulf and
supervisor one week in advance (1 A4-page is
enough)
21Follow up of your thesis work
Seminar
- Every month, 2 persons (PhD, students) of the lab
present their results in a seminar (English)
22Follow up of your thesis work
Good planning !!!
- First version of literature study Christmas
holiday - End of experiments around Eastern holiday
- First version of materials and methods Eastern
holiday - Submission second half of May
- Defence end of June
23Next to work
- Coffee-break every day at 15.00 in the coffeeroom
- Lab activities (e.g. soccer game in september)
- Suggestions are always welcome!!
