3Brother Robert Millet
- "As has been observed before, it was one thing to
get Israel out of Egypt, and another thing
entirely to get Egypt out of Israel! - Indeed, the compelling drama of the deliverance,
exodus, and wanderings of Israel proved to be a
tragedy, a story of lost opportunities--a saga of
things as they might have been."

Depressed and Murmur
?
Humble and Teachable
5Exodus 14
- 8 And Pharaoh hardened his heart and he pursued
after the children of Israel - 10 And the children of Israel lifted up their
eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after
them and they were sore afraid and the children
of Israel cried out unto the LORD. - 11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were
no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to
die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt
thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? - 12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in
Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve
the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to
serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in
the wilderness.
6Children of Israel
- Murmured
- Before they were delivered from Egypt
- Before the dividing of the Red Sea
- Before getting water from the rock
- Before receiving manna
- After receiving manna!
7President David O. McKay
- Let us watch ourselves and be true to the
examples set by the Church and the brethren and
sisters who have sacrificed their lives, their
all, to build the Church and to advance the
principles taught therein. - This warning is sometimes expressed in this
way 'Speak not against the authorities.' What
does it mean. Be not a murmurer that is what it
means. It is one of the most poisonous things
that can be introduced into the home of a
Latter-day Saint--this murmuring against
presidents of stakes, high councilors, Sunday
school superintendents, presidents of
high-priests' quorums, seventies, elders,
priests, teachers and deacons.... and yet because
of his weakness, because, perhaps, of some little
fault that we see in an officer, we begin to
murmur and find fault. - Better stop murmuring, and build up. Remember
that one of the worst means of tearing down an
individual is slander. It is one of the most
poisonous weapons that the evil one uses.
Backbiting and evil speaking, throw us into the
class of malefactors rather than the class of
benefactors." (CR, Apr 1909, p67)
8Elder Maxwell
- For us, as laborers in the Lord's vineyard,
to murmur over life's
inequities is, Jesus
indicated, "to murmur against
the goodman of the house" (Matthew
2011). The goodness of the Lord of the house is
attested to in many ways, yet as guests many of
us still murmur about present accommodations - As in the case of the episode of the golden calf,
the view from the desert floor is very different
from that atop Mount Sinai. Perspective makes
such an enormous difference.
9The Lords Response to Israels murmuring?
- Exodus 193
- And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called
unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt
thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the
children of Israel - 4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and
how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you
unto myself. - 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed,
and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar
treasure unto me above all people for all the
earth is mine
10What was Moses trying to do at Sinai?
- DC 84
- 20 Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the
power of godliness is manifest. - 22 For without this no man can see the face of
God, even the Father, and live. - 23 Now this Moses plainly taught to the children
of Israel in the wilderness, and sought
diligently to sanctify his people that they might
behold the face of God
11What happened at Sinai?

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and
the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and
the mountain smoking and when the people saw it,
they removed, and stood afar off. 19 And they
said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will
hear but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

- Moses acts as intermediary between Israel and God
(Ex 349) - Then, the carnal commandments or Law of Moses,

14Exodus 34 Joseph Smith Translation
- "And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two other
tables of stone, like unto the first, and I will
write upon them also, the words of the law,
according as they were written at the first on
the tables which thou brakest - but it shall not be according to the first, for I
will take away the priesthood out of their midst
therefore my holy order, and the ordinances
thereof, shall not go before them for my
presence shall not go up in their midst, lest I
destroy them. - But I will give unto them the law as at the
first, but it shall be after the law of a carnal
commandment for I have sworn in my wrath, that
they shall not enter into my presence, into my
rest, in the days of their pilgrimage.
15Sec 84 Continues
- 25 Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst,
and the Holy Priesthood also - 26 And the lesser priesthood continued, which
priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of
angels and the preparatory gospel - 27 Which gospel is
- 1) the gospel of repentance
- 2) and of baptism,
- 3) and the remission of sins,
- 4) and the law of carnal commandments,
- which the Lord in his wrath caused to continue
with the house of Aaron among the children of
Israel until John
16Question
- What things might we miss out on, simply because
were not willing to wait on the Lord?
