Latitude and Longitude
2
Latitude
  • Lines of latitude are drawn from east-west to
show distances north or south of the equator.
  • 90N (North Pole) is the greatest distance north,
while 90S (South Pole) is the greatest distance
    south.
  • Each line of latitude will run parallel to the
    equator, around the entire world.
  • The Equator splits the Earth into two equal parts

Longitude
  • Are drawn from north-south from pole to pole to
show the distances east or west of the Prime
Meridian (0) which passes through Greenwich,
    England.
  • The greatest distance is on the opposite side of
the globe which is 180 (which is half way around
    the world.
  • The Prime Meridian splits the Earth into two
    equal halves.

Hemispheres
  • The Equator divides the world into two equal
halves which are known as the Northern and
    Southern Hemispheres.
  • The Prime Meridian and the 180 line of longitude
split the Earth into two halves, the Eastern and
    Western Hemispheres.
  • Each degree () of latitude or longitude is made
up of exactly 60 minutes () which gives a more
    precise location.

  • When reading latitude and longitude your first
reading will always be so many degrees North or
South, while your second reading will always be
so many degrees East or West.
  • Latitude and longitude lines will intersect to
make up a set of coordinates.
  • Halifax, 44N,63W will give you the block that
Halifax is located on a map. N because we are in
the Northern Hemisphere, and W because we are
    located in the Western Hemisphere.
  • To be more specific, we must give the minutes()
to give an exact location on a map.
  • Halifax, 4435N,6340W is an exact location.

Relative vs. Absolute Location
  • Relative location of a place is not the exact
location, but it will give you a general area
    where the place is located.
  • For example, Horton High School is located next
to Highway 101. Think of some on your own ideas
  • Absolute location is a specific location, a set
of coordinates will give you an exact location.
Rescue centre in St. Johns Newfoundland is
located at 4735N,5240W. Horton High School is
located at 75 Greenwich Road South.
  • Think of your own examples of absolute location
