3
History
  • Bagatelle from Italian bagattella
  • Represents a trifle
  • Bagatelle was the highlight of the party hosted
    by King Louis XVI
  • After Bagatelle was introduced at this party it
spread rapidly across France and other countries

4
History
  • From 1770 to 1850 Bagatelle was as popular as
    Billiards throughout England and Britain
  • During this period of time Bagatelle became part
of a list that was restricted to play from 1 a.m.
to 8 a.m. and on Sundays, Christmas Day, and Good
    Friday

5
Playing Surface
  • Bagatelle table resembles billiard tables
  • One difference between the two tables is that a
bagatelle table has one round end
  • There are nine holes on the round end which are
protected by pins that serve as an obstacle for
    the player
  • Hole number 9 is placed in the middle and the
other holes 1-8 are in semi-random order at the
    end of the table
  • Each holes number represents the point value of
    that hole

Size of table
  • Size of table depends of size of balls
  • Sizes vary from 6 to 10 feet long and 2 to 3 feet
    wide
  • 6 foot tables use 1 inch balls
  • 7 foot tables use 1 1/4 inch balls
  • 8-10 foot tables use 1 7/8 inch balls

8
How to Play
  • 8 white balls are struck in succession followed
by 1 black ball by a player using a stick or cue
  • The black ball doubles the point value of that
    ball
  • The point value is totaled at the end of a
players turn which allows the next player to
    have a turn

9
Winners
  • The winner is determined by the player with the
highest score after all players have had a turn

10
Modern Bagatelle
  • Pinball and Pachinko have become modern versions
    of Bagatelle
  • The scoring methods have changed to electronic
devises which allows balls to score points as
they travel around the games surface, instead of
scoring when the ball comes to a stop
  • Examples are flippers and chutes which make the
    point totals much higher

11
Modern Bagatelle
  • The game show The Price is Right adopted the a
form of Bagatelle to create a game called Plinko

time period and the country or region in which
    the game is played
