Government Initiative

• Sport and physical recreation are good for us!!
• The government recognises this and has been
  trying for years to get more of us to take part.
• This work is mainly done by the Sports Council.

The Sports Council

• There are 5 sports councils- England, Scotland,
  Wales, Ireland and UK.
• They are funded mainly by the government and were
  first set up in 1972 to
• Increase participation
• Increase quality and number of facilities
• Develop excellence in sport.

Campaigns

• Sport for all Disabled People (1980)
• Improve the numbers of participants who had a
  physical disability.
• Fifty Plus All to Play For (1983)
• Improve the numbers of participants over the age
  of 50 years old.
• Ever Thought of Sport? (1985)
• Improve the numbers of young people.

Have they being Successful?

• The table shows results from surveys carried out
  around the UK.
• Activities included- walking, swimming, keep
  fit, cycling, golf, running, tennis and many
  others.
• Still nearly half of the population still do none
  of the activities.
