  • Rarely or never perform regular exercises
  • Spend between 3-4 hours daily watching TV or
    playing computer games

    aware of the dangers they are facing.

Why Is It Important ?
  • Being overweight or obese can affect on the
    academic attainment of the child.
  • Obese children usually suffer from sleeping
    disorder, depression, lack of energy, headaches,
    and many other symptoms.
  • Most students in poor health have difficulty
    learning.

Long-Term Consequences
  • Obese children have an 80 percent chance of
    becoming overweight or obese adults.
  • Obesity in adulthood increases the risk of
    diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
    asthma, arthritis, and a general poor health
    status.

What are the steps that schools could take?

1- Enlighten The Students
  • Constantly provoke and encourage the students to
    make healthy choices
  • Develop awareness campaigns, presentations and
    morning assemblies

2- Include Health Education Within the Taught
Curriculum
  • Develop and maintain programs that teach the
    importance of nutrition and physical activity.
  • Develop an integrated Health Curricula

3- Limit The Students Choice at School to
Healthy Food Only
  • High fat, high sugar food increases the intake of
    calories and causes weight gain
  • Easy access to non-healthy food develop non
    healthy habits and increases obesity.

  • Limit the choices in the canteen to healthy
    low-fat and low salt food.
  • Limit the portion sizes.
  • Restrict the sweets and carbonated beverages

4- Increase The Physical Activities
  • Increase intramural activities and P.E. periods
  • Increase the playground area
  • Give the students a choice of interscholastic
    activities outside school hours.
  • Consider opening a fitness club after school for
    both students and parents.

  • Parents should be a positive role model.
  • Parents should understand the importance of
    exercise and healthy food in order to have an
    affective role in promoting healthy habits.
