Phylum Aphragmabacteria(Thermoacidophiles)

• Live in extremely hot, acidic environments
• Found in volcanic vents, hot springs, cracks on
  ocean floor that leak acid

• Live in very salty water
• Found in the Dead Sea Great Salt Lake

Phylum Methanocreatrices(Methanogens)

• Live in anaerobic environments (no oxygen)
• Give off methane gas
• Found in swamps, sewage treatment plants,
  digestive tracts of animals

• Make antibiotics
• Cause tuberculosis, diphtheria and acne
• Most live in soil and are recyclers

• Includes some of the most important microbial
  organisms (Escherichia, Enterobacter, Rickettsia)
• Almost all are rod shaped
• Used to produce fermented products
• Some found in guts of animals

• Spiral shape with flagella at each end
• Move in corkscrew motion
• Causes syphilis and Lyme's disease

• Grow in colonies (chains or groups)
• Have chlorophyll photosynthetic
• Called blue-green bacteria
