Title: Anna Moreno
1VAMAS round robin test of LCA data exchange
ISO TC184/SC4 Bath meeting 06/07/2004
2The CASCADE project
- Growth thematic network CASCADE (Co-operation and
Standards for Life Cycle Assessment Data in
Europe) - 11 partners belonging to
- Data model developers (ISO TC 184)
- LCA software developers (ISO TC 207)
- Policy makers
- Industrial partners
3What has been achieved up to now
- A standard interface has been built to allow LCA
software and data model developers to dialog - ISO 14048 (LCA data format) has been mapped into
a Reference Data Library (ISO 15926) - XML file can be automatically generated from the
RDL data base - Ontologies derived from ISO 14048 have been
developed

6The Round Robin aims
- To give the tools to
- Exchange data on LCA without ambiguity
- Build sharable LCI data base
- Develop life cycle thinking
- Use the life cycle data since the design phase
- Make researchers be aware of the ISO TC 184 output
7What will be achieved through the round robin
- Demonstration that
- Different LCA software can exchange data through
a standard interface compatible both with ISO TC
184 and ISO TC 207 standards - SMEs will can send LCA data using a format that
is compatible with any software conforming to the
previous standard interface
8What will be provided to the participant
- EXCEL file for an example of LCA data
- Ontologies derived from ISO 14048
- XML/OWL file for a given example
- ISO 10303-235 ARM Entity Instance Worksheet
9Other objectives obtained by the round robin
- The role of ISO TC 184 for the development of
standard interface among different computer
systems will be demonstrated - A framework for exchanging and sharing technical
information not only on LCA through the web will
be built - SMEs will be educated to the use of international
standards

12but the round robin is not enough
- The majority of workers have a low technical
knowledge - People feel frightened about what they are not
familiar with - Long distance learning objects are valuable to
overcome the mistrust about new technologies - Diffusion of these methods among the standards
communities network could be very helpful
13In the knowledge society the knowledge remains
the domain of few experts
- The increase of knowledge is creating communities
that know a lot about a narrower field - The lack of communication between these expert
communities has brought islands of knowledge - Normal people feel they are drowning in the sea
of knowledge - So the few expert people should share their
knowledge with many non expert people - Long distance learning could overcome these
problems
14One example the educational level of Italian
workers only 0.6 has a technical university
degree
15The size of Italian SME (Small and Medium
Enterprises)1 worker with technical university
degree every 130 enterprises
Italian SMEs cover the 97 of the national
production
16The ENEA e-learning platform mission
- To promote the sustainable development through
the diffusion of scientific culture and
technological transfer - To provide scientific knowledge to anyone,
anywhere and at anytime - The users are free to learn what they want, when
they want, and where they want - ENEA has developed a standard model of courses to
facilitate the long life education of workers
also in the field of complex standards
17Conclusion
- The gap existing between the domain expert and
the production world can be overcome only if the
knowledge is freely accessible to anyone - ENEA is open to international collaboration for
the development and the share of other learning
objects related to the use of international
standards - All the SC4 members are invited to exploit the
results of CASCADE among their customers - The round robin exercise will provide an example
of the application of these ideas - Further partners and participation will be
welcome
