the Eyes of A Faith Based Grantee

Male Research Programs
The Male Advocacy Program (MAP) is funded by a
research grant awarded to The City of Life
Christian Church MAP provides family planning
and reproductive health information, education,
counseling and referral services for men of all
ages.
5The Male Advocacy Program
- We are a two-fold entity
- The City of Life Christian Church Male Advocacy
Program was designed to establish a male focused
program to serve men of all ages. - Our Male Advocacy Program (MAP) is funded by a
Title X Male Research Grant.
6Myths About Faith Based Organizations(FBO)
- Always try to preach
- Only want to help their own members
- Will try to convert us
- Will not be receptive to certain
participants/patients - Dont believe in Family Planning
7Considerations Before Partnering With F.B.O.
- Are their religious beliefs in conflict with the
services that you wish to offer? - Is the FBO Traditional or Contemporary?
- How is that FBO received in the community?
- What ties do they have in the community?
- What are the demographics of the congregants?
- How can the program and the FBO benefit one
another?
8MAPs Work with FBOs
- The City of Life Christian Church
- The City of Life Christian Churchs youth
department utilized the MAP staff at their recent
Youth Conference where over 150 youth were
involved in a MAP lecture. TCOLCC is a very
progressive - Being a part of the church, we were very familiar
with the population and the culture of the
church. This gave us insight into our recruitment
and marketing strategies.
9Our Work with FBOs
- Bethlehem M.B. Church (BMB)
- This is a Faith Based Organization where the
Pastor has a close relationship with his
community and also a genuine concern. The church
is located in an area that has a heavy drug and
prostitution population. - During initial meetings with BMB, several key
items were discussed, which should take place
during any initial meeting with an FBO - Why does BMB want to have MAP work with their
congregates? - How can the Male Advocacy Program (MAP) work to
address the needs of BMB congregates? - What are MAPs program goals?
- What information will be presented and what will
the format look like? - What are ways to work together to make sure BMB
Church and MAP are both getting their needs met
through the collaboration?
10MAPs Work as FBOs
- Juvenile Detention Center (J.D.C.)
- This is a facility that houses juveniles between
the ages of 10 18 until they are completed with
their court dates, are returned home to their
families, placed in foster care, or are sentenced
to serve time in a correctional facility. - Youth Build
- This is a facility that trains participants on a
construction trade and also provides them with
G.E.D. training and certifications. The ages of
these participants are 18 25 years of age.
11Collaborations (contd)
- Job Corps
- This is a facility has a G.E.D. program and it
also teaches the participants various life skills
and trades. It differs from Youth Build as the
participants have the option of residing on
campus. The age range for these participants is
16 to 24 years of age. - Riverview Gardens High School
- This is a high school in the St. Louis County
area that has a high STD rate and known for
students actually having sex on campus. There is
also an extremely high rate of unplanned teen
pregnancies at the school as well.
12How To Effectively Work With F.B.O.s?
- Get to know/research the FBO
- Educate the FBO on actual facts and statistics
regarding reproductive health issues in their
community. - Incorporate some of their congregants as
volunteers - Create an alliance with the FBO AND the community
13How To Effectively Work With F.B.O.s?
- What they believe
- Do not offend their beliefs
- That they ARE Faith Based and their beliefs are
their beliefs

16Benefits Of Partnering With An F.B.O.
- Most are already recognized and well received in
their community - Congregants may consist of people whom you
normally may NOT have access to - They can give you a connection with the ENTIRE
family as opposed to just one specific
participant - FBOs congregants can be GREAT volunteers for
your programs - Most of the time, the building/location already
established
17- You all have one common goal and that is to
improve the reproductive health of your community
by - Reducing STDs, including HIV/AIDS
- Reducing the rate of unplanned pregnancies
- Providing family planning and reproductive
health information, education, counseling and
referral services to males.
