- Established in 1926, CSIRO is Australias premier
science organisation - CSIRO carries out research and development of
social and environmental importance in the

- Initiated by CSIRO in 2003, the National Research
Flagships program is one of the largest
scientific research endeavours ever undertaken in
Australia, with the total investment to 2010-11
expected to be close to A1.5 billion - National Research Flagships are large-scale
multidisciplinary research partnerships that
harness world-class expertise to tackle national
priorities such as water, energy, climate,
health, oceans, minerals, and manufacturing - CSIROs 17 Divisions are the business units of
CSIRO which conduct research across the
Agribusiness, Information, Manufacturing and
Minerals, and Sustainable Energy and Environment
sectors

- Worldwide, CSIRO ranks in the top one per cent of
scientific institutions in 12 of 22 research
fields - More than 90 spin-off companies use CSIRO
generated intellectual property and expertise - CSIRO is Australias leading patenting
enterprise, holding over 3,900 granted or pending
patents - CSIRO researchers produced nearly 2,000 major
scientific articles in 2007, and over 8,000
client reports, plus providing secondments,
industry workshops, seminars and specialist
publications - CSIRO publishes 16 peer reviewed science
journals, and has a catalogue of over 1,000
science and popular titles

Melbourne - 1973 65 libraries around Australia and 170
library staff. A Central Library in Melbourne,
with autonomous divisional libraries - 1984 80 libraries and 180 library staff
