Title: Education during the Industrial Revolution

1
Education during the Industrial Revolution
  • By Peyton Edmond, Sarah Keels, and Savannah Rhyne

2
Working Children and Education
  • Problem
  • For the working children of Industrial
Revolution, school is out of the question.
Because they have to work such horrible hours,
there is no time for learning.
  • Solution
  • Scrooge is planning to shorten work hours and
raise money to build schools for the poor
children if elected. He will try to pull together
the rich schools to allow the working children to
attend there until the schools are built. He will
limit children under the age of 13 to nine hours
of work every day and at least three hours of
    schooling each day.

3
Harsh School RulesProblem
  • Although the working children would give anything
to be at a school, they are not all math and
literature. They are full of school rules. Harsh
    rules.
  • Students must stand up to answer questions and
    wait for permission to speak
  • Students must call teachers sir or maam
  • Students must stand when an adult enters the room
  • Students must use their right hand for writing at
    all times
  • Girls will learn needlework and boys will learn
    technical drawing
  • Prizes will be given for good attendance
  • Students must not put their hands up unless told
    to do so
  • Students must not ask questions
  • Talking and fidgeting will be punished
  • Children who are late, behave badly, or do poor
    work will be punished

4
How Can Scrooge HelpSolution
  • If elected, Scrooge will try to ban any kind of
physical harm in the schools, he will develop a
new discipline system, and he will make the
school experience a good one for all children.

5
School ConditionsProblem
  • The classroom is typically a small room with a
few windows for light, heated by a small coal
burning stove. The teacher sits at a desk
resembling a podium and the students sit on
benches. There is a freestanding blackboard.
Writing materials consist of sand trays and
    slates.

6
How Can Scrooge Help?Solution
  • He will make the rooms larger and make the
teachers as well as the students desks more
comfortable and more practical by adding a table
    in front of the benches.

7
How Does Scrooge Feel?
  • He feels pity for the working children of
London and rage for the adults forcing them to
work. He feels that all children should have the
chance to go to school and not have to work until
    they get an education.

8
Scrooges New Programs
  • He will start night school where the children can
work shorter days and go to school in the
    afternoon and night.
  • He will start Operation Bring Schools Together
which will bring richer schools together so the
working children can go to school until the new
    schools can be built.

9
VOTE SCROOGE FOR MAYOR.He will create a better
learning environment for the working children of
London.
