History

• Department of Defense and the White House Office
  of Science and Technology Policy organized the
  Advanced Distributed Learning(ADL) initiative.
• Goals
• providing access to high-quality, tailored
  education and training materials,
• making these materials widely available whenever
  and wherever they are required.

What is SCORM??

• SCORM refers to the Sharable Content Object
  Reference Model.
• Scorm is a collection of standards and
  specifications for web-based e-learning.
• It governs how online learning content and
  Learning management systems(LMS) communicate with
  each other.
• Run-time environment and clients side content.
• Eg DVDs using same standards.

• Current version of SCORM is 1.2
• Automated tools can be used to build according to
  SCORM specification, leaving user to focus on
  content shows, tells and teaches.
• SCORM objects are Reusable, Accessible,
  Interoperable, and Durable.

SCORM

• SCORM is composed of 3 sub-specifications
• The Content Packaging section specifies how
  content should be packaged and described. It is
  based primarily on XML.
• The Run-Time section specifies how content should
  be launched and how it communicates with the LMS.
  It is based primarily on JavaScript.
• The Sequencing section specifies how the learner
  can navigate between parts of the course (SCOs).
  It is defined by a set of rules and attributes
  written in XML.
