  • As a pod you are going to create 2 Words Webs.
  • You will complete 1 for the east of the United
    States, and 1 for the west of the United States.
  • It can include words, pictures, colors, whatever
    you would like.
  • We will complete an example together.

  • Used 1828-1841 - trading cloth, knives and guns
  • Travelers (Men and some women) worked together
    for most of journey (fear of Native Americans)
  • Cooperation ended when New Mexico and Arizona
    came into sight.
  • Trail established for trade/creating ranches/find
    fortunes in the SW.
  • First Caucasian settlers of Southwest arrived via
    the Santa Fe Trail.

  • 780 miles from Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe
  • Used 1828-1841 - trading cloth, knives and guns
  • Travelers worked together for most of journey
    (fear of Native Americans)
  • Cooperation when New Mexico and Arizona came into
    sight.
  • First Caucasian settlers of Southwest arrived via
    the Santa Fe Trail.

The Oregon Trail
  • Initial Trails left from Independence, MS
  • First established by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman
    (Missionary Teachers) in 1836.
  • People (families) followed in Prairie
    Schooners (Wagons covered in sail cloth pulled
    by Oxen). Often wagon trains would have up to
    75 wagons
  • Goal was to establish new farms and communities
    in the fertile northwest (Willamette Valley,
    Oregon)

    covered in sail cloth pulled by Oxen).

  • Left New York b/c of persecution and death of
    leader.
  • Went west to settle (Land and Convert Native
    Americans).
  • Traveled from Nauvoo, Ill to the edge of the
    Great Salt Lake.
  • Eventually came into Arizona and Mexico, but
    stayed based in Salt Lake City
