Why LISTSERV ?

• LISTSERV offers
• Moderated lists
• Allows users to self-subscribe or unsubscribe
• Allows non-University of Iowa subscribers
• Provides online archives
• You can administer the list yourself
• Can be advertised publicly

• Except for a few minor bumps, the upgrade to
  version 15.5 went well

Anti-Spam Project

• Were 165 lists with SendPublic
• Any spammer can send to those lists
• Spammers are harvesting the list names from the
  LISTSERV archives list.uiowa.edu/archives/index.h
  tml
• Using listname_at_list.uiowa.edu as the fake from
  address and
• Sending spam to all of those lists

Some Solutions

• Send keyword,Confirm
• Forces the sender to confirm that they actually
  sent the message. (Can be changed on request form
  or by list owner.)
• Confidential Yes
• Removes the listname from the LISTSERV archives
  page. (Can be changed on request form or by list
  owner.)
• Some lists might be better served as Exchange
  lists.

  discussing more secure options.
• If you secure a SendPublic list, please let me
  know so I can remove that list from my list of
  165.

• The message is sent to the first editor for
  approval.
• All editors can send to the list.

• When more than one person needs to approve.

• All moderators must be listed as editors.
• The message is sent to the moderators for
  approval. Load Share.
