    funding from the Government of the Republic,
    foreign governments, and other national and
    international donors for development work to be
    carried out by civil society organisations

Mandate
  • Primary mandate To contribute towards the
    eradication of poverty and its causes by granting
    funds to civil society organizations for the
    purposes of

  • implementing development projects of poor
    communities and
  • strengthening the institutional capacity of other
    civil society organizations that provide services
    to the poor communities.

  • Secondary mandate Promote consultation, dialogue
    and sharing of development experience between
    civil society organizations and relevant organs
    of state debate development policy and to

  • Undertake research and publication aimed at
    providing the basis for development policy.

BIOGRAPHICAL DATA
  • Likusasalethu Leatherfern Project
  • Established in 1986 by 10 subsistence maize
    farmers.
  • Assisted by DBSA and Agri-one( National
    Department of Agriculture and the former KaNgwane
    Government)
  • Located in Nkomazi Local Municipality at
    Driekoppies, a rural area in Ehlanzeni District
    Mpumalanga Province.
  • Nkomazi Municipality has 334 415 inhabitants .
  • 41 unemployment rate. (Statistics SA 2001 )

  • Growing Leatherfern on a 10 ha land
  • Grading and packaging
  • Exporting Leatherfern to Netherlands (main
    market)
  • Supplying Multi-flora in Johannesburg and
    Pretoria
  • Producing Mangoes and Sugarcane for the local
    market.

CURRENT STATUS
  • 10 ha of Leatherfern planted
  • Bulk produce exported to Netherlands
  • Additional 10 ha being prepared, planting to
    start in September
  • Offer made by Braaks to sell a 17 ha farm with 2
    cool rooms, a pack house and 3 tractors to the
    project members.
  • Sugarcane sold to TSB.
  • Mangoes supplied to local traders and vendors
  • Department of Agriculture provides extension
    services.

HOW HAS THE PROJECT IMPROVED THE QUALITY OF LIFE
  • Opportunity for income generation and
    development( 10 main project members take home no
    less than R 2 500.00 p/month)
  • 54 permanent jobs created ( no less than R 650.00
    p/month)
  • 35 local seasonal workers employed.
  • Access to financial assistance and recognition (
    expansion 20 ha)
  • Collective pooling of resources for common goal.
