Title: Matter, Mixtures, and Solutions

1
Matter, Mixtures, and Solutions
2
What is matter?
  • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up
    space.
  • Matter is broken down and classified into three
    states
  • --solids
  • --liquids
  • --gases

3
What is a physical property?
  • A physical property is something that can be
observed, measured, or changed without changing
    the substance itself.
  • Color, shape, sizeall of these things are
    physical properties. Others include magnetism
physical state, ability to conduce or insulate,
    and measurements.

4
Magnetism
  • Magnetism is a physical property because it
describes an objects ability to attract other
    objects.
  • Electromagnets battery, wire and nail
  • Attraction north/south or south/north
  • Repulsion north/north or south/south
  • Poles north and south

5
Physical State
  • Physical state refers to whether the substance is
    a
  • Solid definite volume and shape
  • Liquid definite volume, not shape
  • Gas no definite volume or shape

6
Conduction and Insulation
  • A conductor is able to transmit heat,
    electricity, or sound.
  • - Why do we use a pot holder to pick up hot pots?
  • An insulator prevents the passage of heat,
    electricity, or sound
  • - Why do you wear fleece in the winter?

7
Measurement
  • Objects can be measured using
  • - volume length x width x height or LxWxH
  • - mass triple beam balance
  • - length ruler, meter stick
  • - time stop watch
  • - temperature thermometer, C or F

8
Mixtures
  • Mixtures are made of two or more substances that
combine but keep their physical properties.
  • Examples
  • Sand and water
  • Iron fillings and salt
  • Salt and pepper

9
Solutions
  • Solutions are made of two or more substances that
combine so that their physical properties DO
    change.
  • Examples
  • Sugar and water
  • Kool-aid and water

10
What is a boiling point?
  • All substances on Earth have a melting point and
    a boiling point.
  • The melting point is the temperature the
substance has to be in order to melt.
  • For water 0 C or 32 F
  • The boiling point is the temperature the
substance has to be in order to boil.
  • For water 100 C or 212 F

A Review
  • What is a physical property?
  • What is a mixture?
  • Why dont the ingredients in mixtures change
    their physical properties?
  • What is a solution?
  • Why dont the ingredients in solutions change
    their physical properties?
  • What is a boiling/melting point? In water?
