Title: Duke Environmental Management System Training
1Duke Environmental Management System Training
2The Goal of the Training
- This training should better familiarize you with
Dukes Environmental Management System and how to
use it
3What is an Environmental Management System?
- An Environmental Management System or EMS is a
systematic approach that allows an organization
to manage its environmental process and
performance by - Identifying the environmental impacts of the work
done - Establishing priorities, setting performance
improvement goals - Providing a means for initiating projects
- Continuously monitoring and measuring success
4What is an Environmental Management System?
- The EMS is made successful through a continual
cycle of - - planning,
- - implementing,
- - reviewing, and
- - improving the processes and actions that an
organization undertakes to meet its environmental
goals

5Why have an EMS?
- An EMS can be a beneficial system that engages
organizations in assisting in pollution
prevention, conserving resources,
improving/exceeding compliance requirements, and
improving overall environmental performance
6How did Duke come to have an EMS?
- EPA began inspecting universities and
administering significant penalties for
non-compliance violations. Most settlements for
violation citations resulted in the requirement
to plan and implement an EMS. - Example of violator and penalties
- MIT-over 500,000 in penalties and agreed
environmental project funding
7How did Duke come to have an EMS?
- An EMS Planning Committee was formed to develop
an implementation plan for an EMS. - The committee included members from OESO, FMD,
Nicolas School, Procurement, student groups, and
other areas. - Drafted an EMS Plan and a Communications Plan
8Environmental Policy the Vision
- After the EMS Plan was drafted the committee
worked on obtaining Senior leadership commitment
through an Environmental Policy which was signed
in March 2005
9Translating the Vision of the Environmental
Policy
- Based on the Environmental Policy 5 improvements
areas were chosen to focus on
10Defining Strategic Measures
Performance Improvement Areas
Performance Indicators
- In order to be able to track the improvement
areas measurable performance indicators were
established
Sustainability Compliance Resource Conservation
Awareness Stewardship
GHG Reduction Reduced Solid Wastes/Increased
Recycling Reduced Hazardous Wastes Reduced
water Consumption Energy Use
11Duke University Environmental Performance
Implementation Guide (DEPI)
- The DEPI Guide was designed to assist staff and
students in developing, implementing, and
tracking projects that help Duke reach its
environmental goals by positively effecting the
Performance Indicators - The DEPI Guide is available on the EMS website
(www.safety.duke.edu) or by contacting the OESO
Office (684-2794) for a hard copy
12DEPI Guide Worksheets
- The DEPI Guide has five worksheets for project
teams to complete, to assist in the completion of
the worksheets the following sides have
additional information regarding aspects,
impacts, objectives, and targets
13Aspects and Impacts
- When beginning your EMS you need to identify the
Environmental Aspects and Impacts in your work
area. Use Worksheet 1 in the DEPI Guide. - Look at the activities and determine which
elements interact with the environment, these are
you aspects. - Any positive or negative changes to the
environment due to activities in your work area
are the impacts. They should relate to the
performance indicators
14Examples of Aspects and Impacts
- Environmental Aspects
- Pouring chemicals down the drain
- Improper disposal of recyclable materials (i.e.
cans, paper, etc.) - Leaving computers and lights on when not in use
- Environmental Impacts
- Contaminating city water supply
- Increase solid waste taken to landfills
- Increased energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
15Objectives and Targets
- An objective is the goal that you have set out to
achieve, this should be quantifiable if possible. - A target supports the achievement of the
objective and should be a measurable criterion - Use worksheet 2 in the DEPI Guide to list
objectives and targets
16Examples of Objectives and Targets
- Objectives
- Start recycling drink bottles
- Turn off lights and computers when not in use
- Targets
- Recycle 20 pounds per month
- Reduce office energy use by 100 kWhs per month
17EMS Project Tracker
- Once a team has been established and a project
decided on, it should be entered into the EMS
Project Tracker - The EMS Project Tracker is an on-line database
designed to assist in the documentation and
organization of EMS Projects - The EMS Project Tracker is available at
