2 INSTITUTE OF ATOMIC ENERGY (IEA)
SLOVAK-POLISH BILATERAL MEETING Zilina/Trencin,
27-28 Oct.,2008
The first Polish institute in the field of
nuclear energy was founded in 1955 as the
Institute of Nuclear Research (INR) The
Institute of Atomic Energy (IAE) was emerged in
1983 as one of three independent research
institutes formed on the basis of the INR
The main nuclear facility of the IAE is the MARIA
high flux research reactor of 30 MW power On
the 1st January, 2007 the Research Developing
Center for Radioisotopes POLATOM joined the IAE
structure at the right of Research Enterprise

8 Neutron Transmutation Doping of Silicon Physical
Basis of Processs
SLOVAK-POLISH BILATERAL MEETING Zilina/Trencin,
27-28 Oct.,2008
- Process of neutron transmutation doping of
silicon is based on nuclear reaction induced by
an interaction of reactor thermal neutrons with
nuclei of one from the silicon stable isotope
performed inside special irradiation channels in
the reactor core - Resulting from that reaction a stable isotope
of phosphorus (31P) is a doping component in
silicon single crystal lattice - 30Si14 (n,?) 31Si14 31P15
- The concentration of phosphorus nuclei being
electron charge carriers to be generated during
the silicon transmutation doping process defines
a specific resistivity and modifies single
crystal onto n type semiconductor - Process doesnt create any radiation hazard
products of nuclear reaction are characterized by
low level radioactivity and short decay time
(e.g.. for 31Si T1/2 2.6 h).
