Background Info

• Archimedes was born in the city of Syracuse,
  Sicily in 287 bc at that time Syracuse belonged
  to Greece
• Its not known but historians think Archimedes
  studied at a SCHOOL IN Syracuse but went to a
  university in Alexandria, Egypt
• We dont know much about his family but he had a
  best friend in Alexandria called Conan of Samos
  who helped him through university
• He died during the siege of Syracuse in 212 bc

Discoveries Inventions

• One of Archimedes famous inventions was the screw
  pump this helped many Greeks for it made water
  easier to extract which made water distribution
  around Greek cities easier.
• The claw of Archimedes was a fearsome weapon to
  defend Syracuse from the roman invaders. This
  claw was designed to lift ships out of the water
  with a giant grapple and drop them back into the
  sea hopefully sinking them.
• one of the most famous inventions of Archimedes
  was the heat ray which some thought was a myth
  Archimedes thought that when the suns rays were
  magnified onto a ship it would burst into flames
  so Archimedes designed giant mirrors to go along
  the docks of Syracuse when the Romans came again
  their ships did burst into flames

Importance of discoveries

• From the last slides the main importance of
  Archimedes discoveries and inventions was to
  defend his fair and beautiful homeland city
  Syracuse. He defended it with massive mirror
  towers and giant claws (and a mention to the
  Greek hoplites as well) he defended it well until
  he died in the siege of Syracuse when the Romans
  finally made it to the city
• Also if it wasnt for him water distribution
  through Greece would be travelling to a well
  every day

My Opinions

• Jay I thought Archimedes was a brilliant
  inventor he defended his city for years and
  helped water get sent around Greece much easier.
