Purpose of the Berlin Conference

• This was an international meeting that was meant
  to solve problems with European colonies in
  Africa
• It was also meant to guarantee free trade in the
  Congo and Niger
• European nations also wanted to civilize the
  people of Africa

The Berlin Conference and Its Consequences

• Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, Britain, Germany,
  and Portugal split up the continent into colonies
• This sped up the want for land in Africa
• Only 2 nations were left independent in the years
  immediately after the conference

The Aftermath of Colonization

• The original thought was that Africans would
  benefit because they would be buying European
  goods.
• This never happened because many resisted against
  the imperialists
• When the last nations finally gained independence
  in 1975 they were left without their most
  valuable resources and were left to extreme
  democratic problems.
