ID-cards of various kinds have been in wide use
for more than 50 years.
  • A major challenge with ID-cards is to make them
hard to forge.  The "classic" ID-card consisting
of a piece of hard paper with photo, handwritten
    signature, some owner-related data like
citizenship, birth date, and gender as well as
issuer information has proved to be far too easy
to manipulate.  Improved coating, watermarks, and
holograms could have improved this situation if
not the "dark side" also had improved their
    skills and equipment.

3
What about a fingerprint?
  • Better security, harder to forge a fingerprint
  • Many companies are considering using fingerprint
instead of signature for authorization on
    credit cards

4
Better Security with Fingerprints
  • Biometric methods cannot be stolen or lost.
  • Minutia files
  • By using biometrics you do not have to memorize
many different passwords or pin codes.
  • Your finger is always with you

5
Fingerprint Technology on the Rise
  • Many companies are considering using fingerprint
instead of signature for authorization on
    credit cards
  • IBM, Motorola, Unisys, MasterCard, the U.S.
    Secret Service, Social Security Administration,
  • States are jumping on board
  • California, Georgia, and Mississippi.

6
The Cost
  • Just a few years ago, biometric fingerprinting
devices cost well over 1000. Today, readily
available devices for computer security cost
    around 100-200 (including software).
