Title: Writing Molecular Formulas

1
Writing Molecular Formulas
2
Molecular Compounds
  • 1. What are ionic compounds?
  • compounds that are made up of ions not atoms
  • 2. What do atoms do in order to become ionic
    compounds?
  • the metal transfers their excess electrons to the
    non metal

3
Molecular Compounds
  • 3. What are molecular compounds?
  • two non metals sharing electrons

4
Molecular Compounds
  • 4. How do you name molecular compounds?
  • The following prefixes to describe how many atoms
of each non metal you have
  • mono-1, di-2, tri-3, tetra-4, penta-5, hexa-6
  • septa-7, octa-8, nona-9, deca-10

5
Molecular Compounds
  • Examples
  • 1. carbon dioxide
  • 2. dihydrogen monoxide
  • 3. diphosphorus pentoxide
  • 4. Nitrogen trioxide
  • 5. Oxygen difluoride

6
Acids
  • 5. What are acids?
  • acids are special type of molecular compound that
kind of acts like an ionic compound when it
    encounters water,
  • 6. What do all acids have in common?
  • all acids have an Hydrogen that takes off when
    the molecule encounters water

7
Acids
  • 7. How many types of Acids are there?
  • 2-Binary Acids and Ternary Acids
  • 8. What is the difference between the two?
  • Binary-two elements-Hydrogen and a Halogen(F, Cl,
    Br, I)
  • Ternary-three or more elements-Hydrogen and a
    Polyatomic Ion

8
Acids
  • 9. How do you write the formulas for Binary
    acids?
  • easy Example Hydrochloric acid
  • 1. acid at the end of the name tells you you
have an acid-write down an H
  • 2. look for the part after the Hydro, you will
find the root word of the halogen, write that
    symbol down-Ta Da!

9
Acids
  • Examples
  • 1. Hydrobromic acid
  • 2. Hydrofluoric acid
  • 3. Hydroiodic acid
  • 4. Hydrochloric acid

10
Acids
  • 10. How do you write the formulas for ternary
    acid?
  • 1. you will not find Hydro but you will find
    acid-put an H down
  • 2. the name will be made up of the root of a
polyatomic ion and the suffix -ic or -ous
  • 3. if it is -ic then the polyatomic ion is the
-ate version, if it is an -ous then it is the
    -ite version

11
Acids
  • 4. Find the right polyatomic ion and write it
    down
  • 5. Whatever the charge of the Polyatomic ion
then that is how many Hs you need

12
Acids
  • Examples
  • 1. Phosphoric acid
  • 2. Acetic acid
  • 3. Sulfurous acid
  • 4. Nitric acid
  • 5. Sulfuric acid
