  • Jason Clark, Ashley Pachter
  • October 2, 2007

2
Overview
  • Camera Packaging and Parts
  • Analysis
  • Battery Data and Reuse
  • Survey
  • Current Recycling Practices
  • New Design

3
OBJECTIVES
  • More sustainable product
  • Increase Revenue
  • Decrease Electronic Waste

4
Electronic Waste
  • Electronic waste is the waste that comes from
broken, unwanted or outdated electric components.
Many of these electronic components are toxic,
and non-biodegradable. Included in this are
    batteries.

5
Reducing E-Waste
  • By Reusing the cameras battery 4 times, Kodak
can reduce the e-waste caused by battery disposal
    by 75.
  • Reusing the battery saves Kodak money, and helps
    the environment
  • Kodak already recycles 76-100 of camera
components sent back to them by companies that
    develop pictures (CVS, etc)

6
Packaging
  • Decorate box
  • Smaller box
  • More fit in shipping, cheaper
  • Smaller tab on end
  • Transport more cameras per trip

7
Camera Parts
  • Casing
  • Flash
  • Battery
  • Lens
  • LED
  • Film
  • Crank/Button
  • Circuit Board
  • Capacitor

8
Film
  • How it works

Survey
10
Survey Analysis
  • Most Common Brand is Kodak
  • Most Often People Buy is Less than Once a Year
  • Most Common Reasons to Buy
  • Special events
  • Lost/Dont want to lose or damage digital
  • Most Common Quality is Flash

Battery Data

Battery Data

Reusing The Battery
  • With the simple calculations done on the last
page, it was found that the battery in a camera
can be used up to 15 times.
  • Kodak already has a recycling program set up that
can be used to also recycle the batteries, and
with a simple test it can be determined whether
or not they can be used again.
  • The ones that do not have a sufficient charge can
    be disposed of properly.

14
Current Recycling Methods
  • 77-90 of product can be remanufactured
  • Everything not re-used is recycled elsewhere
  • Camera bodies are sent to centralized facility
  • Cameras designed to be recycled up to ten times
  • Plastic parts are recycled and remolded

15
Current Recycling Practices
  • Wholesale Mini Lab Recycling
  • All brands models
  • Kodak pays for shipping
  • Takes Care of Complete Life Cycle

16
Matrix
17
Possible Improvements
  • New casing
  • Metal
  • Lightweight, Aluminum
  • Hinge for opening instead of clamp
  • More durable, longer lasting, more life cycles.
  • New packaging
  • Reuse battery

18
Conclusion
  • After a survey of the market and testing the
    product we found
  • The battery can be reused
  • New casing would be more sustainable
  • The need is lessening, so we need to market more
