The History of Kudzu

• Kudzu is a vine plant from the pea family
  (fabacea) that is found native in Asia.
• It grows at a near exponential rate (up to one
  foot a day) especially when in a warm / moist
  climate.

• Introduced into the South Eastern U. S. in the
  early 1900s with a main use as an erosion
  preventer.
• Has quickly spread to an area of several million
  square acres.
• Because it grows so thick and fast, Kudzu will
  usually kill native plants including full size
  trees by blocking the sun light.

Controlling Kudzu

• Completely extirpating a growth of Kudzu may take
  years because of the thickness of growth and the
  well established roots.
• The best method is the use of herbicide to kill
  the plants but, even this will take 5 or more
  years to be successful.
