The Romanesque style is characterized by massive
stone walls, dramatic semicircular arches, and
use of different materials as decorative elements

• Romanesque Revival houses have many of these
  features
• Round arches over windows and/or entryways
• Heavy appearance with thick masonry walls with
  cavernous entryways and window openings
• Rounded or rectangular towers with conical roof
  
• Facades are asymmetrical
• Variable stone and brick façade, polychromatic
  facades with contrasting building materials on
  elaborate examples.
• Terra-cotta details in masonry, such as column
  capitols or decorative bands and insets
• Related styles are Richardsonian (after architect
  H. H. Richardson) and Sullivanesque (after Louis
  Sullivan)

efficient use of space, and workmanship.

• Craftsman Style homes have many of these
  features
• Even proportions
• Low to medium-pitched roof with gabled dormers
•   Wide eaves with exposed roof rafters
•   Decorative braces
•   Porch with square columns
•   Built-in cabinets, shelves, and seating
• Stone chimneys
•   Sloping foundation
• Emphasis on handcrafted materials such as
  stained glass, natural woods, hammered metal
• Related styles are Arts and Crafts and Bungalow

Mission Style

The Mission style is similar to both Craftsman
and Prairie styles, but with the shaped parapet
from early Spanish mission architecture.

• Mission houses have many of these features
• Shaped parapet at entry, sometimes also in other
  places
• Low, stable proportions
• Large square masonry columns at front porch
• Low-pitched hipped roof
• Decorative brackets and exposed rafters
• Often have Spanish tile roofs
• As in Craftsman homes, handcrafted materials are
  emphasized stained glass, hammered or forged
  metals, natural woods.

• The Mission style is similar to the Craftsman
  style, but with detailing reminiscent of the
  early Spanish missions.

Prairie Style

Frank Lloyd Wright, and emphasized the
relationship between the building and the natural
surroundings.

• Horizontal proportions
• Open, flowing plans
• Hipped roofs with broad eaves
• Large square or rectangular porch supports
• Massive flat chimney
• Long bands of windows called ribbon windows
• Use of stained or patterned glass
• Geometric shapes
• Natural materials, colors, and textures
• One of the few indigenous American styles,
  developed by Chicagos Prairie School architects,
  including Frank Lloyd Wright

Art Deco Art Moderne

Art Deco and Art Moderne buildings are geometric
in shape and decoration.

• Art Deco Moderne houses have many of these
  features
• Flat roof with no eave
• Usually have stucco exterior surface
• Often used metal and glass block detailing
• Geometric patterns, especially on Art Deco
  buildings
• Art Deco uses vertical proportions, Art Moderne
  uses horizontal proportions
• Art Deco buildings can be very colorful
• Fair Park, a National Historic Landmark, is the
  largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the
  United States, and the only original pre-1950
  Worlds Fair site in existence.Tour the Hall of

• Related styles are Streamline Moderne , Zig-zag
  Moderne

simple homes with lots of charm.

• Minimal Traditional houses have many of these
  features
• Medium-pitched gable roof with shallow eaves
• Compact, asymmetrical layout
• Often have a front gable with round vent
• Decorative chimneys are typical
• Small, simple front entry porch
• Wood or brick exterior
• Lack decorative detailing, aside from decorative
  shutters and porch-roof supports
• Often called Postwar or Depression-era homes

• No decorative elements
• The structural components are often visible

• May have cantilevered sections without visible
  support
• A minimalist style, the building is a sculpture

• Simple lines, but not stark
• Smooth walls with no applied decoration
• Flat or low-pitched rooflines, sometimes using
  odd shapes or angles
• Large windows, often in ribbons or taking entire
  walls
• Different materials on different areas of the
  building
• Newly-developed materials were often used
• Some have an early space-age Jetsons feel
• Remember the Brady Bunch house?
