- Population of 15,000 and the capital of Kilifi
District (district population estimated at
750,000) - Significant Economic Potential Tourist

little medical care, and too few jobs, where - 1 in 8 children die before the age of 5
- (Causes Acute Lower Respiratory Infection,
Malaria, Measles)

- Undernourishment saps attention in classrooms.
Hungry kids cannot focus on learning - Undernourishment is an underlying cause of each
of the previously listed diseases - Undernourishment saps the local economykids

Opportunity for Meaningful Change
- In 2006-2007, we applied for a 17,000 matching
grant to deliver roughly 100 computers to 4 high
schools library in Kilifi - Partnership members are
- Rotary Club of Kilifi (Kenya)
- District 9200 (covering Kenya 4 other
countries) - Rotary Club of Vinings (GA)
- Rotary Club of Charlotte Dilworth South End (NC)
- District 7680 (covering North Carolina)
- Digital Links (nonprofit supplying the
computers/training) - Seek to build friendships with cultural
correspondence between Interact clubs in US

Project Overview
- Immediate ImpactHealthy Students Provide
medication to 10,000 primary students over a
4-year period who suffer from malnutrition and
parasites - Long-Term ImpactSecondary Education Sponsor
50-75 secondary students to 4 years of high
school, covering school expenses including
tuition, textbooks, and uniforms

Project Overview
- An estimated 85 of students are infected by
intestinal parasites - Rolling back malnutrition using safe, vetted
treatmentsOne pill will kill 99 of parasites - Side effects are very mild and rather rare upset
stomach - Programs by WHO and UNICEF around world already
use this treatment - Treatment given once a year
- Estimated cost is 29 per child per year
1410,000 Healthy Students
- Modeled on a previous initiative undertaken in
Kilifi with AMREF International and District
Hospital - Seek to treat 10,000 primary students over a
4-year period with costs of 20,000 - Controlled studies show that one treatment
results in significant decrease in
absenteeismstudents gain the equivalent of over
one month of schooling per year - Extraordinarily cost-effective intervention
15Secondary School Education
Project Overview
- Only 10 of students in Kilifi get more than an
8th grade education - Project will provide secondary school
scholarships to cover all education costs - Aim to spark a call to service Scholarships
recipients will be required to do any of the
following - (1) mentoring younger siblings,
- (2) teaching computer classes, or
- (3) providing health education to other students
- We are seeking to sponsor 50-75 secondary
students for a 4-year period at a total cost of
70,000

level, and we aim to be the first in line when

- Project Development Many opportunities exist to
participate in manageable and meaningful ways.
We are in the process of establishing the
following five committees - Fundraising CommitteeSupports our vital role of
raising funds so Kilifi Rotary Club can serve the
greatest number of students. Creative people and
those with personal contacts in Rotary clubs
across the country or world are especially
needed. - 2. Program Expertise Committees Support the
planning and implementation efforts of Kilifi.
Among other tasks, they will contact other clubs
with previous experience, develop a list of best
practices and work to ensure sustainability in
projects. The four committees are - Health/Deworming Committee
- High School/Scholarships Committee
- Skills Training/Computer Project Committee
- Interact Club Exchange Committee
