  • This system provided limited control of equipment
  • Opened chiller valves

  • Alarmed on various conditions
  • Major equipment started/stopped from the field

  • The original project appropriation was approved
    as a replacement type project with some
    upgrades

  • The project scope evolved as the design of the
    automation system progressed. The project team
    realized that what we put in place would be here
    for approximately 20 years.

  • Increase chiller plant instrumentation
  • Increase cooling tower instrumentation
  • Increase electrical instrumentation
  • Install new valve actuators
  • Install VFDs on all major systems

Accomplishments
  • Revised Chiller Sequences
  • Chiller plant operation revolves around the
    cogeneration system
  • During the winter months cogen steam is used for
    heating
  • During the shoulder months cogen steam is used
    for process and in absorption chilling
  • Summer operational base is one 1500 ton steam and
    one 1500 ton electric chiller

  • Automatic Peak Shaving
  • This site uses its diesel generators to limit
    electrical peak demand
  • Concept ties directly to chiller plant operation
  • On peak demand days all absorption chillers are
    already running and additional electric chillers
    are staged in
  • The diesel generators are used to clip this
    peak demand for approximately 300 hours per year
