The Alby Head lifeboat is on 24-hour service in
all weathers to assist anyone in danger on the
seas along a 200-mile stretch of treacherous
coastline and far out into the ocean.

About Dave Ive lived in the small town of Alby
all my life apart from a few years in the
merchant navy. My two brothers both work on local
fishing boats. I run a boat repair yard by the
town harbour which is very handy when the
lifeboat siren signals a rescue. Im almost
always the first to arrive. I took over as
skipper or coxswain two years ago. My father was
the coxswain before me. We have a great crew. I
cant imagine our town without its lifeboat
station.

About Greg After I left school I worked for 15
years in a factory making diesel engines and I
restored old motorbikes as a hobby. Then I was
made redundant. I moved to Alby with my wife and
children to take a job as a mechanic in a
business looking after farm machinery. The
lifeboat station was looking for a mechanic to
help out and I volunteered. It has grown since
then and I now spend at least one day a week
working on the boat. I go out as a member of the
crew. The people round here were so friendly and
welcoming when we arrived so its great to be
part of something that is so important.

About Shane Im the youngest member of the crew.
The other guys give me a hard time sometimes but
they mean well. I moved here with my family when
I was 17 and was very unhappy because it seemed
so boring after being with my mates in a much
bigger town. Alby seemed so sleepy. I work as a
barman at the Harbourside pub. We get all the
fishing crews in here after they have been at sea
for long spells. They are great company and talk
to me lots about the lifeboat. Alby isnt as
boring as I thought, especially not on a rescue
in heavy seas!
