1
Procedures for harmonised sampling, sample
treatment and analyses in Harbasins - WP3
Prepared by Hans Klamer, Joop BakkerJohan
Åkerman, Timen TopRIKZ (WP3 lead) Based on the
report of WP3 deliverables 2.1 and 2.2 Aspects
hindering harmonizationand comparability of data
handling concerninghazardous compounds, by
Melissa van Hoorn. Adapted after receiving
comments from Susanne Boutrup (NERI)John Thain
(CEFAS) Patrick Roose (Mumm)

Matrices that will be sampled
  • Total Water (Tw) ? Matrix mandatory by WFD
    regulations
  • filtered or centrifuged Water (Cw) ? Matrix
    mandatory by WFD regulations
  • Suspended matter (SPM) ? Recommended by
    OSPAR/CMA, 2006.
  • Bottom sediments (Sed) ? Recommended by
    OSPAR/CMA, 2006.

5
Proposal for compounds that will be analysed (1)
  • Criteria
  • Member of the WFD priority compound list.
  • Mainly discharged by point sources.
  • Persistent pollutant transport not restricted
to just the source river basin.
  • Widespread pollution encountered along the North
    Sea coast.

Sampling strategies (1)
General
  • Do note take sediment and water/SPM samples
    simultaneously
  • Take water/SPM at 1.5 m
  • Monitor CTD parameters, read pH
  • Go from low to higher expectedcontamination (see
    next slide)

9
Sampling strategies (2)
Estuaries
  • Determine salinity in lower estuary
  • Take sediment sample(s)
  • Take water samples and SPM samplewhile
    monitoring salinity
  • Sail to mid-salinity station(s)
  • Take samples
  • Sail to fresh water end-member
  • Take samples.
