1
Feedback from group discussions
  • Cancer Prevention Research Network
  • Launch Workshop
  • Sept 2007
  • Network website
  • www.ihs.manchester.ac.uk/ResearchNetworks/Preventi
    oncancer/

2
Prevention community
  • Current situation
  • Difficulty of finding relevant funding
  • Funding limited for prevention work relative to
    other areas of funding
  • Lack of evidence
  • Skill mix
  • Who benefits?

3
Funding
  • Lack of obvious route
  • Commercial too long term
  • DH
  • Overseas?
  • Possible routes?
  • Food stds agency
  • Framework 7
  • CRUK?
  • DTI / Medical insurers
  • Commercial HR benefits

4
Lack of evidence
  • Knowledge of side effects
  • Behaviour
  • Environment
  • Drugs
  • Epidemiological
  • Intervention side effects
  • Very few studies (to our knowledge)
  • Quackery
  • Anecdotal
  • Side effects?
  • There are opportunities for our Network

5
Who should be involved?
  • Intervention (Level) (The research community)
  • Clinician
  • Epidemiologists
  • Behaviour scientists
  • Drug groups trials units
  • Nutritionists
  • Basic science e.g. biomarker end points /
    predictors of cancer
  • Health promotion/Social Marketing
  • Statisticians Health Economists
  • Public Health
  • The Public Public Bodies
  • Mass Media/Internet
  • Biomarkers and imaging
  • Politicians
  • Social Scientists
  • Web sites

6
Who benefits / should be involved?
  • Public / patient representative
  • Public policy
  • Education
  • Social economic policy
  • Environment
  • Local authority
  • Toxicology / molecular epidemiologists

7
Start up / Infrastructure funding
  • Pilot data
  • Biomarker identification
  • Partnerships
  • Maintain capabilities
  • Population / patient databases
  • Id high risk populations / groups

8
What is the scope of the cancer prevention
research network?
  • Facilitator Alison Wearden

9
  • Purpose of network is to foster research
    collaborations between scientists working on
different cancers and coming from different
    disciplines
  • Therefore felt that scope of network should be
    kept as broad as possible

10
  • Should screening research and research on genetic
predisposition be within scope of network?
  • Yes assume that scope goes beyond primary
    prevention
  • Screening can inform prevention at different
    stages eg HPVI
  • Importance of interaction of different risk
factors need to talk to each other

11
Activities of network
  • Research collaboration, sharing resources and
    expertise
  • Education and publicity
  • Updated website, searchable by expertise and
    specialism
  • Meet twice per year different disciplines give
over view of what they are doing
  • Patient involvement

12
A cancer prevention network?Challenges for the
future and how can we solve them?
13
Challenges
  • Funding
  • Boundaries
  • Intellectual, geography etc
  • Prevention primary secondary tertiary?
  • Prevention where is the endpoint
  • Behaviour change!!
  • Which behaviours?
  • Scale of studies
  • Sites and Silos
  • Useful interventions (priorities)
  • Strengths and weaknesses in GM
  • Population, Multiple Trusts, Universities and
    disciplinary mix
  • The public patient issue

14
Network will help
  • Have you met anyone you didnt know before whom
    you might work with?
  • Cancer geneticist GSOH WLTM Health economist for
  • Communication
  • Institutions (from Cochrane to Paterson)
  • Have you had an idea you hadnt had before?
  • Network to develop it
  • Have you identified a funding source you hadnt
    thought of before?
  • A conduit and strength (you are not alone)

15
Actions
  • Equity map!
  • Bang for buck
  • Prioritise a quick win for the network!
  • Future network meetings on themes
  • Identify funding approach
  • Asset audit
