Persuasion
  • DEFINITION Persuasion is a form of argument and
    involves the act of trying to convince someone of
    the wisdom of a certain action or thought.
  • Types of persuasive writing editorials,
    informational arguments within essays, debates,
    political speeches, sermons, reviews,
    advertisements
  • Being good at persuasion gives one a sense of
    power and control over his/her thoughts and
    actions.

  • The authors view should be clear the author
    wants the reader to adopt, agree with or change
    his or her attitudes, opinions, values, or
    behavior.
  • WORD CHOICE The author must choose words
    carefully and often uses loaded words and
    emotional triggers.
  • DETAILS and SUPPORT The author must use
    details, examples, analogies, short narratives,
    and comparisons as support.

  • Clear statement of the topic in a thesis
    statement.
  • Fair and accurate presentation of both sides of
    the issue.
  • OR present only one side.
  • The use of logical evidence to support the

Persuasive-Descriptive FormOne-Sided
  • Introduction State the topic of your essay in a
    thesis statement and give the three basic
    reasons/support you will be discussing.
  • Body Paragraph 1 Reason/Support 1 with evidence
    and details that explain your first reason.
  • Body Paragraph 2 Reason/Support 2 with evidence
    and details that explain your second reason.
  • Body Paragraph 3 Reason/Support 3 with evidence
    and details that explain your third reason.
  • Conclusion Restating the thesis and your
    support ideas.

Persuasive/Two-Sided Essay
  • Introduction State the problem/topic/issue.
    Give both sides of the argument and then clearly
    identify your opinion and what side of the issue
    you support or believe in.
  • Side A Give the support as to why you believe
    in or support that side of the issue or problem.
    Give examples and evidence that back up your
    argument.
  • Side B Give reasons why someone would support
    the other side of the issue.
  • Conclusion Restate the issue/problem and
    reiterate your position and why that is the best
    side to support or believe in.
