  • A network is created when two or more computers
    are connected together to share information.

  • The Internet is a global network of computers.
  • Just a few of the things it allows people to do,
  • send email,
  • view web sites,
  • download files such as mp3 and images,
  • chat with people live online,
  • post messages on newsgroups and forums.
  • play multiplayer games online
  • watch movies and TV programs
  • chat and view on webcams

Connection
  • Dial Up Modem A connection to the Internet
    using phone lines. (Slow)
  • Direct Network Card A connection to the
    Internet using a network card and a T1 line.
    (Fast)

Connection
  • Broadband (wireless) -Broadband can carry
    multiple signals by dividing the total capacity
    of the medium into multiple, independent
    bandwidth channels, where each channel operates
    only on a specific range of frequencies. This
    means that a broadband Internet connection is
    much quicker than a dial-up and makes web page
    load-ups instant.

  • DSL (Cable) Is the same as a Direct Connection
    but uses the cable TV wires.

  • WWW World Wide Web
  • The Information which can be viewed by installing
    a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or
    Opera.

Web Browser
  • Are the software used to view world wide web
    pages.
  • The very first web browser was written by Tim
    Berners-Lee, while at CERN (a European center for
    physics research).
  • However the two browsers that are the most
    popular at the moment are Microsoft Internet
    Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

Address/URL
  • A URL is the address of a web site page or
    document on the Internet.
  • Anatomy of a URL

  • http// - short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol
  • www. - page on the World Wide Web
  • internet-guide - the domain name
  • index.html - This is the web page inside the
    folder.

Home Page
  • This is the main page of a web site and is
    usually the "index.html" page of a web site.
  • This page is usually the home page of a web
    browser.

Move to a previous web site. Move ahead to a
previous web site. To cancel the operation. To
start the web site over. Move to the Home page of
the Web Browser.

Net Search
  • Is using the Internet to find specific
    Information.
  • Search Engines are the main way people on the
    world wide web find web sites / pages for
    relevant subjects. Search Engines are large
    online databases of websites that allow you to
    search for specific queries.

Download
  • This is the term used for when people transfer
    data from the Internet to their personal
    computer.
  • Downloads could be such things as web pages,
    pictures, music files, computer games, computer
    software applications, movies and much more.

Upload
  • An Upload is the opposite of a download because
    to upload is when you transfer a file from your
    computer to the Internet.
  • For example when webmasters put their web sites
    on the Internet they Upload them. FTP is the most
    popular way to upload.

E-Mail
  • Email is shorthand term meaning Electronic Mail.
    Email much the same as a letter, only that it is
    exchanged in a different way. Computers use the
    TCP/IP protocol suite to send email messages in
    the form of packets through the Internet.

Chat Rooms
  • This is an area online where users can chat with
    other members in real-time.
  • There is a warning for parents. Children and
    parents need to be alerted to the dangers of
    using these rooms and given strategies for safe
    use.
  • Chat Room's do usually contain rules and are
    usually moderated / patrolled by volunteers.
    However this cannot always avoid undesirable
    behavior occurring.

Blog/blogging
  • A blog / blogs is similar to an electronic
    journal or diary. The writer, known as a blogger,
    makes periodic entries, which can be added daily
    or monthly and are on any subject.
  • You can therefore find blogs for any subject you
    are interested in such as politics, sports,
    dating, yoga, computing or hacking.
  • A blog is typically a very personal webpage like
    a diary is, with all kinds of information
    including written musings and photos.
