Project Description
  • Our system allows distributed family and friends
    to share digital pictures.
  • These pictures appear on the door of each
    member's refrigerator.
  • Also allows communication among family members
    through notes and a calendar.

3
Target Clientele
  • General Adult Public.
  • Specifically Designed For 70 Age Group
    (Grandparents).
  • Minimal Computing Experience.

4
Technology
  • Touch screen doors.
  • Built in scanning technology.
  • Handwriting recognition software.
  • Light Pen.
  • Satellite Network Connection.

5
Prototype
  • Due to technology limitations, the prototype was
    implemented in two different states
  • A Software-based Demo.
  • A Full-sized Physical Mock-Up.

Empirical Evaluation Results
  • Features with limited functionality were the
    easiest to use.
  • Features with no real-world applicable metaphor
    were not obvious.
  • Problems with wording (Edit/Scan).
  • Problems caused by nonexistent technologies.
  • VB6.0 Quirks caused users to wrestle with system
interaction rather than focus on the tasks.

9
Subjective Evaluation Results
  • Users, in general, found it easy and intuitive to
    use, notwithstanding the VB6.0 Quirks.
  • Users wanted more on-line help, such as
    tool-tips.
  • Novice computer users wanted features, such as
voice recognition, to ease interaction with the
    system.
  • Advanced computer users wanted more-powerful
features, such as laser manipulation of objects
    and more calendar capabilities.

10
Future Revisions Lessons Learned
  • Implement in a better OOP language, such as Java.
  • Redesign send function and help abilities.
  • Define or avoid technical terminology.
  • Add the ability to zoom-in/out to specific dates
    on the calendar.
