Title: GCSE Double Award Health and Social Care

1
GCSE (Double Award ) Health and Social Care
2
Health and Social Care
  • Equivalent to two GCSEs
  • Grade recorded twice A A - G G
  • Curriculum time to equate with two GCSEs
  • Designed to be delivered over two years but from
September 2003 can be offered as a one year
    programme.
  • First certification will be Summer 2004.

3
Health and Social Care
  • Strong vocational content
  • Three units (equally weighted)
  • -two internally assessed
  • -one externally assessed()
  • Unit 1 Health, Social Care and Early Years
  • Unit 2 Promoting Health and Well Being
  • Understanding Personal Development and
    Relationships ()

4
Delivering Health and Social Care
  • There is no set order to the delivery of the
units. However there are several things to
consider when planning the order of delivery
  • Staff expertise
  • Resources
  • Test dates
  • Does one unit help with the underpinning
    knowledge of another
  • Is one unit more easily accessible for students
at the start of the course
  • The organisation of work placements and visits

5
Unit Structure
  • Each unit gives specific information to help both
    students and staff.
  • What you need to learn
  • Banner for students for internally assessed units
  • Assessment criteria grid
  • Guidance for teachers

6
Unit Delivery
  • It is essential that students are aware of the
requirements to meet the grading criteria and
feel confident in their own ability. Some of the
strategies which might facilitate this are
  • Go through the assessment objectives with them(
this may need to be repeated on several
    occasions)
  • Break down the unit into more manageable chunks
  • Evidence can be achieved in stages
  • Ensure students cover all aspects of the unit to
provide them with a complete overview and feel
    for the unit
  • The unit is assessed after completion of all the
    objectives

7
The Assignments
  • The work set should
  • be set out clearly and concisely with a final
    deadline
  • enable students to fully meet the evidence
    requirements
  • be accessible to students working at all levels
  • allow students to produce different types of
    evidence
  • be set in an appropriate vocational context

8
The Value of Induction
  • This provides the opportunity to give students a
    clear overview of
  • the course structure and content
  • the methods of delivery
  • assessment procedures
  • expectations of staff
  • could possibly take place in July and reaffirmed
    in September

9
Good Practice
  • Variety in the style of delivery of the course
    content
  • Review and evaluation skills for both staff and
    students
  • Timetabling to facilitate visits and work
    placements
  • Forge strong links with the local community,
    businesses and voluntary organisations

10
Good Practice To Aid Assessment
  • At the start of the unit give a set deadline date
    ready for marking
  • Work should be presented in a logical manner with
    clearly defined sections
  • The work should be correctly referenced
    throughout and include a bibliography
  • There are no restrictions on length but the work
will probably be 2,000 to 4,000 words
  • Mark strictly to the banner and assessment grid
  • Give prompt feedback and an indication of
    possible improvements

11
Internal Assessment
  • Assessment should take place on completion of the
individual unit, not at the end of the course
  • As part of the assessment process the assessor
should annotate the work to indicate the location
    of evidence
  • The evidence may take many forms-
  • Photographs, posters, videos and audio
    cassettes,witness statements, written reports,
    declaration of guidance, authentication statements

12
Internal Assessment (contd)
  • Students can achieve marks in different bands for
    each criterion
  • The full range of marks should be used as
    appropriate
  • Access to the higher bands requires work which
    demonstrates increased breadth and
    depth,coherence,evaluation,analysis, originality
    and independence

13
Internal Assessment ( contd )
  • Mark Band 1 - Grade F
  • (some support and guidance, student relies on
support and this restricts their mark to this
    band regardless of final outcome
  • Mark Band 2 - Grade C
  • (limited assistance, initial support, teacher
reacts to questions and suggests ideas, this
restricts their mark to bands 1 2 regardless of
    final outcome )
  • Mark Band 3 - Grade A
  • ( independent, occasional assistance but
mainly monitors own progress therefore bands 1, 2
    and 3)

14
Internal Standardisation
  • Internal standardisation should ensure that there
is both accurate and consistent marking across
    the units and assessors
  • It is advisable to sample work of all assessors
    and each of the units
  • It is vital that the centre ensures
standardisation of marks ready for external
    moderation

15
External Assessment of Unit 3
  • This contributes one third to the final grade
  • Examinations are externally set and marked
  • For Health and Social Care the tests are not
    tiered
  • First examination in January 2004
  • Examinations will subsequently be available in
both January and June in H SC (this will not be
    the case in all subjects)

16
External Assessment (contd)
  • Only one resit will be allowed and a charge
    levied
  • The higher mark counts
  • Examinations are 1hr 30 mins duration
  • Specimen papers and mark schemes are available
    from Awarding Bodies
  • The timing of the delivery of this unit needs to
carefully considered to match the test dates
  • The first test could be used as a formative
    assessment tool

17
External Moderation
  • The two internally assessed units are subject to
    external moderation
  • This ensures that National Standards are being
    met
  • Marks will be adjusted if they are not in line
    with these standards
  • This process will be by remote sample and take
place at the end of the course in June
  • Work which needs to be improved will go through
the same process and be re-submitted the
    following June

18
Grading
  • The mark for each unit will be translated into a
    uniform mark ( UMS 0 - 100 ) by the Awarding
    Body
  • Each unit will be reported as both an UM and a
    grade A - G ( or U)
  • The final grade will be determined by aggregation
of the UMS for the three units
  • The total of these marks will give a
qualification grade of AA - GG ( or Ungraded )
