Title: Consoles and Hardware Status

1
Consoles and Hardware Status
  • Erik Gottschalk

2
Overview
  • Consoles will be installed Dec. 19 20
  • Network installation will begin Dec. 11
  • Installation of PCs and monitors can begin as
soon as the consoles are in place
  • We still need to purchase PCs
  • Installation of video matrix switch and
projectors can begin after PCs and monitors are
    in place

Seven types of Systems
  • Console PCs (8 2 spares)
  • Fixed Display PCs (4 1)
  • Communications PCs (4 1)
  • Projector Front-end PCs 2
  • Public Display PC 1
  • VRVS PC 1
  • Linux File Server 1

5
Console PCs (8 2)
  • Console PCs have 3x 19-inch monitors (1280 x
1024) and have the capability to have screen
content displayed on the projector in the
conference room (1-East) and incorporated into a
video conference by sending the video signals
through a video matrix switch. The most likely
operating system for these PCs is Linux.
  • Possible specification (based on WH-11 ROC)
  • AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500, dual PCI Express
SATA motherboard, 1024 MB memory, 80 GB 250 GB,
    SLF305, 2x DVDRW, 2x NVIDIA GeForce 6660 PCIE
    cards, 4x Hyundai 1280 x 1024 LCD
  • Solution 7 Linux PCs (KOI) purchased for CMS
WH-10.(Still need to purchase at least one more
    PC NVIDIA cards.)

6
Fixed Display PCs (4 1)
  • Fixed-display PCs have 3x 21-inch monitors (1600
x 1200) and have the capability to have screen
content displayed on the projector in the
conference room (1-East) and incorporated into a
video conference (same as the console PCs). The
most likely operating system for these PCs is
Linux, and it is likely that these PCs will be
the same as the console PCs.
  • One possibility is to use a fourth monitor output
drive a projector for use as a collaborative work
space, so the video card must be able to drive a
    1280 x 720 (169 aspect ratio) projector.
  • Solution We have prototyped an HP Linux
workstation that appears to satisfy our needs
(CMS event display). We will need four additional
PCs for LHC_at_FNAL NVIDIA display cards.

7
Communications PCs (4 1)
  • Communications PCs have a single 19-inch monitor.
These PCs are expected to be used for email, web
browsing, and video conferencing (Polycom PVX
software and iChat) in the operations center. The
most likely operating system for these PCs is
Windows or Mac OS X running VMWARE-like software
    to support multiple operating systems.
  • To enable sharing of each communications PC
between two people, we may need to use fast
user-switching. The alternative is to have one
PC per person (total of 8) and use a KVM switch
to share the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
  • Solution No solution yet.

8
Projector PCs (2)
  • Projectors in the operations center will have
front-end PCs. The projectors will be used for
collaborative displays in the operations center.
Each PC must be able to drive two projectors. The
operating system is likely to be Linux, and it
must be able to drive a projector with a
    resolution of 1280 x 720 (169 aspect ratio).
  • In the early stages of LHC_at_FNAL we may connect
each projector to the fourth video output from
    each of the fixed-display PCs.
  • Solution No solution yet, so we will connect
    projectors to the Fixed-Display PCs.

9
Public Display PC (1)
  • The public-display PC drives a projector for
display purposes. In this case it is an
    high-definition (HD) projector (1920 x 1080) with
a 169 aspect ratio. A second, lower cost,
alternative is to purchase a 720p projector with
a 169 aspect ratio. The PC should have the
software to make it easy for LHC_at_FNAL users or
Fermilab docents involved in outreach to operate
the PC to select content for the public display.
One possibility might be to record playlists of
MPEG-2 files showing event displays, pre-recorded
monitoring information, video clips of CMS and
LHC, for example. The reason for using
pre-recorded playlists is that we need the
ability to display CMS/LHC content during times
when the LHC is not running.
  • Solution Mac Pro running Mac OS X. This system
is being set up by Visual Media Services for the
    Grand Opening.

10
VRVS PC Linux File Server
  • The VRVS PC is used to provide VRVS video
conferencing capabilities in the conference room
    (1-East).
  • Solution Elliott-style conference room PC.
  • The Linux File Server will serve the same purpose
as the file server that is being used for the CMS
ROC on WH-11. The file server will be located at
    the Feynman Computing Center.
  • Solution The system has been purchased, and is
    operational.
