1
Bell Work
  • Who regulates fisheries on the federal level?

2
Describing Fisheries Management
  • Area Animal Science
  • Unit Aquaculture
  • Lesson 9

3
Objectives
  • Identify government agencies involved in
    fisheries management.
  • Define Limnology.
  • Describe methods of habitat management.
  • Describe methods of harvest management.

4
What is Fisheries Management?
  • The science of working with aquatic organisms,
environments, and the people who use them to
    produce sustained benefits.

5
Fisheries Management Cont
  • Government agencies are in charge of managing
    public waters.
  • Public Waters are considered
  • Waters that are not owned by one person.
  • Water that connects to or feeds other public
    waters is considered public.
  • 3 agencies govern water is Arizona
  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality
  • Arizona Game and Fish Department
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

6
Define Limnology
  • The study of lakes and streams and the forces
    that affect them.
  • Includes studies of
  • Past and Present conditions
  • Plants and animals in the streams
  • Effects of humans
  • Bodies of water are divided into 2 groups
  • Lentic Systems
  • Lotic Systems

7
Lentic Systems
  • Bodies of standing water.
  • Environmental conditions can vary greatly

8
How are Lentic systems Divided?
  • Divided into several zones
  • Littoral zone
  • Part that supports rooted vegetation
  • Limnetic Zone
  • Open water
  • So deep not enough light reaches the bottom to
    support vegetation

9
Division of Lentic Systems
  • Benthic Zone
  • Bottom Layer
  • Extends from shoreline to middle of lake
  • Epilimnion
  • Upper layer
  • Hypolimnion
  • Lower region

10
What are the types of Lotic systems?
  • 4 kinds
  • Perennial streams run all year
  • Intermittent streams run only part of the year
  • Ephemeral streams (washes) are short-lived
    streams that run after rain
  • Interrupted streams run underground for part of
    their course

11
Habitat Management
  • Habitat must be maintained for wild populations
    of fish to sustain themselves.
  • Human actions can alter fish habitat by
  • Removal of timber
  • Removing water for human use
  • Using water for agriculture
  • Grazing along waterways and watersheds
  • Urbanization
  • Recreation
  • Building dams and impoundments

12
How can Fisheries Managers help?
  • Try to enhance the environment for fish
  • Preserve habitat and minimize impacts by humans.
  • Sampling is an important part of managing
    fisheries
  • Netting fish
  • Poisoning fish
  • Electrofishing

13
How are harvests managed?
  • 4 basic ways of harvest of management
  • Creel Limit
  • Length Limit
  • Season Restriction
  • Gear Restriction

14
Creel Limit
  • Limit of a number of fish harvested in one day
  • Allows managers some control over how many fish
    can be taken

15
Length Limit
  • Also known as a slot limit
  • Fishs ability to reproduce is relative to size
  • Allow fish time to mature to reproductive size
  • Increase chances of getting a trophy size fish

16
Season Restrictions
  • Designates a certain time of year or day a
    species may be harvested
  • Protect fish during peak spawning seasons
  • Safety of anglers
  • Multiple seasons conserve a limited resource for
    larger populations of people.

17
Gear Restrictions
  • Limit what kind of equipment or bait an angler
    can use.
  • Examples are
  • Barbless hooks
  • Prohibiting live bait
  • Fly fishing only.
  • Catch and release only
