What is JavaScript?

• A scripting language
• Allows web pages to be interactive
• Allows pages to respond to user input
• Changes static pages into interactive pages

• JavaScript is not the only way to make pages
  interactive. Three other important methods are
  Java, CGIs and more recently Shockwave.

Strengths of JavaScript

• does not require special access to the server to
  make your pages interactive
• requires relatively little time to get started
• relatively easy to learn and use
• does not require additional network interaction
  with the server (in contrast to CGIs)
• can work with Java (interfacing with HTML) or
  CGIs (checking form input, allowing the CGI to
  collect user behaviour information)
