6An amusing, up-to date example Rigidity of
solid matter. The classical theory of solids
with thermal fluctuations proudly explains that
the two ends of a crystalline bar are fixed
relatively (to about the size of an atomic
nucleus.) This is a consequence of the
self-organizing principle of broken symmetry and
is the key ingredient of any precision
measurement. BUT we have just learned from
Moses Chan that this is NOT a property
that persists in a pure crystal in its quantum
ground state! Such crystals are superleaks
and the material can probably flow without
resistance. Crystals appear rigid only BECAUSE
they are too warm and because ordinary forces
are too strong!!
