Chicago. But admirers - of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the master of
international modern - architecture, pointed to this schools cluster
of steel-and-glass - buildings, including S.R. Crown Hall, Alumni Hall
and the Chapel, - as the epitome of beauty and order. Furthermore,
great modern - architects, such as Rem Koolhaas, continue to be
admired and - included in the growth of the campus. In other

Julien Branlard begins work at Fermilab today as
the first John Bardeen Engineering Fellow. A
recent graduate of the Illinois Institute of
Technology, Julien Branlard isthe first
recipient of the John Bardeen Engineering
Fellowship. "Julien will make an outstanding
addition to Fermilab," said Ralph Pasquinelli,
Accelerator Division RF Department Head and the
inspiration behind the fellowship. "He's an
articulate, talented team player who will hit the
ground running with his outstanding engineering
skills." Branlard began his studies in France
and transferred to the Illinois Institute of
Technology in 2000. After graduating with a Ph.D.
in electrical engineering last December, he began
looking for a way to continue his work in the
United States. Fermilab Today 2005

69CHOICE OF COURSES AT IIT
- IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
- Not all courses are offered all of the time
- Some courses will be offered once every two years
- Some courses will be offered once every year
- Some courses will be offered each semester
- Some courses may not be offered/opened if there
are less than 10 students registered for the
course - What you should do?
- Regarding electives, discuss with your professor
at your home university, the elective courses you
will need to take for validation alternatives
submit only once admitted - In this case, it is imperative that once
selected, you submit complete documents to IIT
for an early decision well before - May 1

74TOEFL OR IELTS
- IITs TOEFL Policy ( effective Fall 2011)
- Students with an iBT OVERALL SCORE OF 90 and
above may be unconditionally admitted ( if all
other elements meet IITs admission requirements) - Students with an iBT score of less than 70 will
NOT be admissible - Students with an iBT overall score of 70 89
will be placed into ESL courses on the basis of
their scores in three of the four sections
Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension
Writing. Students are required to enroll in
complete the first of any such necessary course
during their first regular semester at IIT. - A score of less than 20 in a section would place
that student into the corresponding course ENGL
051, ENGL 052 and ENGL 053 respectively at the
regular cost of tuition per course for the year - Currently there is no course for the Speaking
section but this may change effective Fall 2012

75TOEFL OR IELTS
- IITs POLICY FOR IELTS (Effective Fall 2011)
- Students with an overall score of 6.5 and above
may be unconditionally admitted ( if all other
elements meet IITs admission requirements) - Students with an overall score of 5.0 or below
are NOT admissible - Students with overall scores of 5.5-6.0 will be
placed into ESL courses on the basis of three of
the four sections Listening Comprehension,
Reading Comprehension Writing. Students are

76The GRE General Exam
- The exam comprises 3 sections
- Verbal (multiple choice) out of 800
- Quantitative (multiple choice) out of 800
- Analytical (essay) out of 6
- Schools look at a combined V Q score
- minimum score range of 1000-1100/1600
- Analytical score range 2.5 3.5/6
77REVISED GRE GENERAL TEST
- In August 2011, the GRE revised General Test
replaced the GRE General Test. Featuring the new
test-taker friendly design and new questions, the
revised test more closely reflects the kind of
thinking you'll do in graduate or business school
and demonstrates that you are ready for
graduate-level work. - Verbal Reasoning Measures your ability to
analyze and evaluate written material and
synthesize information obtained from it, analyze
relationships among component parts of sentences
and recognize relationships among words and
concepts. - Quantitative Reasoning Measures problem-solving
ability, focusing on basic concepts of
arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. - Analytical Writing Measures critical thinking
and analytical writing skills, specifically your
ability to articulate and support complex ideas
clearly and effectively.
78The GRE GENERAL REVISED TESThttp//www.ets.org/gr
e/revised_general/about/content/
- VERBAL REASONING
- The Verbal Reasoning section measures your
ability to - analyze and draw conclusions from discourse
reason from incomplete data identify author's
assumptions and/or perspective understand
multiple levels of meaning, such as literal,
figurative and author's intent - select important points distinguish major from
minor or relevant points summarize text
understand the structure of a text - understand the meanings of words, sentences and
entire texts understand relationships among
words and among concepts - Featuring new types of questions, the Verbal
Reasoning section measures your ability to
understand what you read and how you apply your
reasoning skills.

- QUANTITATIVE REASONING
- The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your
ability to - understand quantitative information
- interpret and analyze quantitative information
- solve problems using mathematical models
- apply basic mathematical skills and elementary
mathematical concepts of arithmetic, algebra,
geometry, probability and statistics - With increased emphasis on data interpretation
and real-life scenarios, this section has new
types of questions that require you to show your
quantitative reasoning ability. To reduce the
emphasis on computation, the computer-based test
includes an on-screen calculator. And, if you are
taking the paper-based test, a calculator will be
provided at the test center.
81The GRE GENERAL REVISED TESThttp//www.ets.org/gr
e/revised_general/about/content
- ANALYTICAL WRITING
- The Analytical Writing section measures your
ability to - articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
- support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
- examine claims and accompanying evidence
- sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion
- control the elements of standard written English
- The Analytical Writing section requires you to
provide focused responses based on the tasks
presented, so you can accurately demonstrate your
skill in directly responding to a task.
