2Native American Cultures
3Major Native American Groups
Native Americans lived in villages of several
hundred people, growing corn, beans, and squash.
The Iroquois of New York and Pennsylvania formed
a confederation of six nations.
About 500 years ago this area was thinly
populated. After Europeans introduced horses,
Native Americans could live off the buffalo
herds, eating the meat and using the skins for
shoes and clothes.
Native Americans built buildings of sun-dried
brick into cliffsides . They irrigated land to
grow corn, beans and squash. Other groups like
the Navajo and the Apache, moved to this area.
These Native American groups fished for salmon
and gathered plants to eat. They carved ornate
masks and totem poles (tall painted wooden poles
carved with the faces of animals).
