Title: Conclusion/ Works Cited

1
Conclusion/ Works Cited
  • Its the end of the paper as we know it

2
Conclusion
  • 3 Parts
  • Restates the thesis in a new and interesting way
  • Relates to world at large
  • Provides sense of closer and finality

3
Part 1 Restating Thesis
  • It is the first sentence of your conclusion
  • It needs to be stated in a new and interesting
    way--- dont be repetitive!!!
  • Yes, this can be difficultit will take time and
brain powerboth of which you possess!!!

4
Example
  • Original Thesis in Intro.
  • Capital punishment is the worst form of justice
in our judicial system because it does not allow
for rehabilitation, it continues the idea of
killing and it could end the life of an innocent
    person.
  • New (reworded) Thesis for Conclusion
  • Capital punishment is not justice it does not
consider the possibility of remorse for the
crime, it only serves to reinforce the act of
killing, and it does not take into account
    wrongful convictions.

5
Part 2 Relating to the World at Large
  • This part of your conclusion should be getting
    more broad
  • How does your specific topic effect other areas
    of life?
  • How might this effect other countries and
    cultures?
  • What might future ramifications of this topic be?

6
Example
  • Society has fallen into the idea of an eye for
an eye, meaning the punishment should match the
crime. However, America was a country founded on
compassion and tolerance. America also serves as
an example to other countries and that example
should be a shining beacon of charity and
forgiveness. Forgiveness is a tenet of almost
every faith and that is an ideology that every
American should be able to support, especially in
    the justice system.

7
Part 3 Sense of Closure/ Circle idea
  • The last sentence of your conclusion
  • Provides a sense of finalityit should be obvious
that your paper is OVERthis is NOT the time for
    cliff hangers
  • Circle idea (the last line of your paper relates
back to the first line of your paper)

8
Example
  • Attention Getter in the paper
  • The death penalty doesn't deter/ Doesn't
satisfy, doesn't add up - all it does is kill
The idea of capital punishment is prevalent in
todays society that it has even made its way
    into music
  • Last Sentence
  • These times are so uncertain/ Theres a yearning
undefined/ And people filled with rage/We all
need a little tenderness and a little
    compassion.

9
Capital punishment is not justice it does not
consider the possibility of remorse for the
crime, it only serves to reinforce the act of
killing, and it does not take into account
wrongful convictions. Society has fallen into the
idea of an eye for an eye, meaning the
punishment should match the crime. However,
America was a country founded on compassion and
tolerance. American also serves as an example to
other countries and that example should be a
shining beacon of charity and forgiveness.
Forgiveness is a tenet of almost every faith and
that is an ideology that every American should be
able to support, especially in the justice
system. But there is hope, while capital
punishment has made it into music, so has a more
uplifting counterpoint, These times are so
uncertain/ Theres a yearning undefined/ And
people filled with rage/We all need a little
tenderness and a little compassion.
