Interstate Compacts
  • States cannot enter into treaties, but.
  • They can make interstate compacts with the
    consent of Congress
  • These are agreements between states and with
    foreign states
  • Originally made to fix border disputes and keep
    peaceful relations among states
  • Made to regulate shared resources
  • Water
  • Roads
  • Help coordinate authorities between states

  • Congress does not approve if they threaten
    federal govt authority
  • Currently more than 200
  • All 50 states at least have 2 that deal with
    sharing important law-enforcement data
  • Sex offenders

  • Article IV, Sec. 1
  • Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each
    State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial
    Proceedings of every other State.

Privileges and Immunities Clause
  • Article IV, Sec. 2, Clause 1
  • The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to
    all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the
    several States.
  • Cannot make unreasonable distinctions between
    residents and non-residents
  • Can be citizen of any state
  • Can buy, sell, rent property
  • Can marry in all states
  • Can use courts

  • In and out-of-state tuition

Extradition
  • Article IV, Sec. 2, Clause 2
  • A Person charged in any State with Treason,
    Felony, or other Crime, who shall flee from
    Justice, and be found in another State, shall on
    Demand of the executive Authority of the State
    from which he fled, be delivered up, to be
    removed to the State having Jurisdiction of the
    Crime.
  • Fugitives fleeing from justice must be returned
  • Extradition process of returning fugitive
