  • Subordinating conjunctions distinguish
    independent from subordinate clauses.

Simple sentences
  • One independent clause
  • Examples
  • The lion lounged

Compound sentences
  • Composed of two or more independent clauses.
  • Examples
  • The lion lounged, and the hippo hid.
  • The hippo hid deep in the river he did not

  • Composed of at least one independent, and at
    least one subordinate clause.
  • Examples
  • When hippos hide from the mid-day sun, they
    dream of peanut butter.
  • Because the lion lounged, he did not notice the
    fat gazelle.

Compound-complex
  • Composed of at least two independent, and at
    least one subordinate clause.
  • Examples
  • While the hippo was hiding, the lion woke up he
    sniffed the air for gazelle meat.
  • When the gazelle heard the lion coming, he
    smiled, and he put on his hippo disguise.

    butter.
