Title: Function of the Endocrine System
1- Function of the Endocrine System
- Controls many of the bodys daily activities
through chemical secretions - Long-term developmental changes
2The endocrine system is made of glands. Glands
are organs that produce chemicals Endocrine
Glands produce and release chemical products
directly into the bloodstream, where they are
carried throughout the body.
3The chemical product of an endocrine gland is
called a hormone. Hormones turn on, turn off,
speed up, or slow down the activities of
different organs and tissues throughout the
body A hormone interacts ONLY with certain Target
Cells, cells that recognize the hormones
chemical structure
4Hypothalamus links the nervous system and
endocrine system. It controls the pituitary
gland, which in turn regulates other endocrine
glands.
Pituitary gland regulates the body processes
including growth, blood pressure, and water
balance. It also helps to control the activities
of other endocrine glands
5Through negative feedback, when the amount of a
particular hormone in the blood reaches a certain
level, the endocrine system sends a signal that
stops the release of that hormone
Negative feedback is an important way that the
body maintains stable internal conditions, or
homeostasis.
