What Was the Boxer Rebellion?

• A series of Chinese rebellions against
  missionaries and foreign forces
• China had been forced to sign Unequal Treaties
  to foreign powers
• Lasted from 1899-1901
• Concentrated in northern China where European
  powers demanded land, rail and mining rights

• Their name was mistranslated as Fists of

How Did the Boxer Rebellion Begin?

• Resentment increased after China lost a war to
  Japan (1894-1895)
• It began as the Boxers started attacking
  foreign compounds in modern-day Beijing
• A top-ranking German diplomat was killed
• A multinational force of 54,000 troops is sent to
  China
• Includes troops from Japan, Russia, United
  Kingdom, France, U.S., Germany, Italy and Austria

  Boxer Protocol of September 7th 1901
