• It lasted for decades and held the world on the
  brink of disaster.
• It was the clash of the Superpowers.
• Today we will start our unit on The Cold War.

• Cold War The state of hostility, without direct
  warfare that existed between the U.S. and Soviet
  Union.

Yalta Conference

• Yalta Conference Roosevelt, Churchill, and
  Stalin agree to split Germany into zones.
• Western Berlin would be democratic while Eastern
  would be Soviet.

Potsdam Conference

• Potsdam Conference First meeting between Stalin
  and Truman where mistrust between the countries
  began to rise.

Poland Controversy

• Soviet Union refused to allow free elections in
  Poland.
• Eventually in a corrupt election it fell to
  communism.

Satellite Nations

• Satellite Nations Countries subject to Soviet
  domination on Western borders of Soviet Union.
• Eventually Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia,
  Hungary, Romania, and East Germany all fell to
  communism.

• Churchill makes a famous speech saying Stalin was
  creating an iron curtain.
• Iron Curtain Communist domination and
  oppression around surrounding nations.

• Containment Policy that the U.S. must resist
  Soviet attempts to form communist governments
  elsewhere in the world.

• In Greece and Turkey the governments are
  threatened by communism.
• President Truman gives them military aid.

• Truman Doctrine Declaration that America would
  support any country that was fighting communism.
