9Epidemiologic situation
- Table (1) shows that out of the total 340
reported AFP cases for 2005 , 131 are polio
cases, none pending ITD, 84 cases are pending
culture of them 54 are from Mogadishu and 23 from
Lower Shabelle. - One new case was reported from the lab this week
from Mogadishu. -
- The increase in AFP cases in Mogadishu which
started from week 35 is still continuing
resulting in 197 cases in the 17 weeks from week
35 to week 52, (Table 2) with a slight decrease
in the last 5 weeks. The same picture is seen in
Lower Shabelle. - The distribution of the 131 wild poliovirus cases
is as follow - 124 cases from Mogadishu (2 confirmed due to
positive contact) - 5 cases from Lower Shabelle (1 confirmed due to
positive contact) - 2 case from Lasanod, Sool in North West
(Puntlandt) - The virus that was isolated from the Nugal case
reported last week was mistakenly labeled as wild
while it is a vaccine virus. - The two cases from Sool aged 8 and 13 months were
under immunized. Each received only 2 OPV doses. - The December round has now been completed. Data
about coverage is awaited.
10Important Activities
- The international staff who were in contract
break started to return to duty station. - The flight restriction to Somalia will come to an
end this weekend. - The next NID is planned for 23-25 January. In the
south, central and north east regions. In Somali
Land it will be delayed because of the measles
campaign. MOPV1 will be used. - Specific efforts are being made to ensure that
the next rounds are implemented with high
standards through ensuring adequate supervision
and district level micro-planning. - To address the refusal problem an STC is under
recruitment in coordination with UNICEF to ensure
adequate social mobilization strategies. The
recent fatwa from the International Union of
Moslem Scholars was sent to Somalia to be used in
areas where religious reasons are the main cause
for refusals.
