- First of all, all that is said about the budget
is precautionary because the State has not given
us definite directions regarding the budget - We do know
- Mid-Year Reductions 190-250 million
- 09/10 Reductions 200-600 million
- We know that we expect three very difficult years
and that everyone involved in the education of
students will be expected to multi-task in an
effective manner

resources and funding

- Brian Lucas and Richard Hickcox whose schools are
being honored with Title 1 Academic Achievement
Awards for consistently exceeding their API and
AYP for the last two years. These schools are
making progress in closing the achievement gap
among significant subgroups. Commendations to
both schools. Solano Avenue has received this
award for the lst four consecutive years.

- Cheryl Moreland and the staff and students from
Albion Elementary School. On December 18th the
Beverly Hills High School Madrigal Choir,
Marching Band, Cheerleaders and Santa visited the
students at Albion. Â They brought music,
entertainment and each child two wrapped gifts.
BHHS and Albion Street School have been sister
schools since 1927. Â This partnership first began
when BHHS was part of the Los Angeles Unified
School District and has continued for 81 years.
On every Christmas, BHHS has brought Santa, his
helpers and bags of wrapped toys for every Albion
student. Â The Madrigal Singers conductor, Joel
Pressman has been coming for 34 years.

- Pat Romero and the staff from Garza PC. On
December 19th the School Police Department and
Santa visited Garza PC with presents for every
boy and girl. Our LAUSD Police Department had
worked all year collecting and planning their
Santa visit. This year, two schools, Garza PC
and Dena Elementary in LD5, were selected to be
recipients of their generosity. Beautiful warm
jackets were presented to many selected students.

- Carmel Madady and the staff from Breed Elementary
School.This was the fourth year that the Roybal
Youth and Family Center and the Boyle Heights
Technology Center staff, Ozzie Lopez and Maria
Lopez, representing the Youth Center has invited
Breed Street School to be part of "Breakfast with
Santa". Â Other organizations who made this event
possible were the Zamora Brothers who donated the
food, SCECU who donated the toys and the Mayor's
office who donated the Santa. The kindergarten
children viewed the "Polar Express", ate a
scrumptious breakfast, listened to Christmas
music, colored holiday pictures and received back
packs, bicycle helmets and toys from Santa. Â

- Art Duardo and the staff from El Sereno Middle
School for their successful First Academic Pep
Rally held on December 15th. The first ever
Academic Pep Rally, titled the Nightmare Before
Holiday Break focused on CST and CAHSEE
awareness. Coordinated by school APSCS, Michelle
Hernandez, each student received a personalized
themed data sheet focusing on their CST
proficiency.

- The students in the LAUSD Honor Band who
performed magnificently at the New Years 120th
Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. Art
Duardo, principal of El Sereno MS, has been
participating for 25 years as co-director
preparing the band for their annual performance
in the parade. The final product is an excellent
performance that exemplifies his commitment to
music and the students in LAUSD. We are proud of
these talented students and we are proud of Art
too.
