    determine if they are ready for reclassification

    their AVID program held on May 5th. Many good
    ideas and best practices were shared by the
    teachers of each of the schools.

    Recognition Luncheon on May 9th. In attendance to

  • Marguerite Murphy and the staff from Fourth
    Street Elementary for becoming a California
    Distinguished School. On May 16th, the
    administrators, two teachers, the cafeteria
    manager and Director Sandy Winchell attended the
    awards ceremony held at the Disneyland Hotel.
    Pictures were taken with Superintendent Brewer,
    Senator Gloria Romero and Superintendent of
    Public Instruction, Jack OConnell.
  • On June 5th, the teachers and students partook in
    the celebration with Board Member Yolie Flores
    Aguilar attending the joyful event.

  • Students Susan Seav from Bravo Magnet and Amy Dao
    from Wilson HS for being honored at the AALA
    Scholarship/Community Awards Banquet on May 22nd.
    Each will receive a 1,000 scholarship.
    Altogether, 17 LAUSD students were honored at
    this event.

  • To all the Elementary Principals who attended the
    eighth District Reading Action Seminar or
    Non-Reading First Action Seminar evening
    sessions. During the last meeting held on May
    22nd, as a culminating event, each principal
    shared their year-long leadership research
    project with one another. They brought in
    evidence of their research and shared what they
    learned.

  • Carmel Madady and the staff from Breed Elementary
    School for its successful partnership with City
    Year, a division of Americorps. On May 22nd and
    23rd, the City Year transformed the school into a
    more colorful and lively environment. They
    painted handball courts, playground benches,
    stair wells, maps and the front of the school.
  • This was the culminating task of a years worth of
    service, and their gift to the students and
    community.

  • Breed Elementary School for hosting their
  • first Career Day on May 29th for 4th and 5th
    graders. A wide variety of professionals,
  • police officers, a financial partner,
  • an accountant, a software developer and many many
    more volunteers inspired the students by sharing
    their personal stories.

  • Richard Hickcox and the staff,
  • students and parents from Solano Elementary. On
    May 30th the school was honored by the District
    at the LAUSD Title 1 Academic Achievement Awards
    (AAA) Ceremony. Special recognition goes to
    Solano because it is a three-time AAA winner!

  • Leo Salazar and the staff from Belvedere Middle
    School for hosting the first Annual Guitar
    Festival sponsored by the Little Kids Rock
    Foundation, held on May 30th. Schools from
    across the district attended the day-long event.
    LD5 students in attendance included students from
    El Sereno, Nightingale, and Belvedere middle
    schools.

  • Juan Flecha and the principals from the Jefferson
    Family for hosting a fabulous Celebration of
    Family Community Fair which took place on May
    31st and included booths displaying PreK-12th
    grade student work and art from all the schools
    in the Jefferson Family. The articulation
    celebration was held in the morning after many
    months of planning.
  • In the afternoon, a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for
    the new Jefferson Track and Field took place. It
    was a wonderful day for Jefferson and its family
    members.

  • Peggy Just and the staff from West Vernon
    Elementary School. As part of their college
    awareness effort, the school welcomed 40 college
    students on May 31st, from Loyola, Marymount, Cal
    State LA, UCLA and UCSB. The students painted
    college logos on exterior walls, hung college
    flags, and prepared other college-theme displays
    throughout the campus. The college students will
    return in July for the College Awareness Kick of
    Celebration for the schools year-long college
    awareness project.

    Hollenbeck, LA Academy and Stevenson for
    successfully completing 60 hours of training in
    school-wide discipline for the second year. On
    June 5th, to celebrate the last day of training,
    there was a presentation of certificates, a
    delicious lunch served by the Stevenson parents
    and entertainment provided by the
  • Belvedere House Band.

Congratulations
  • Ally Treptow and the students from El Sereno
    Elementary School for their outstanding
    performance of Alice in Wonderland. With
    assistance from a variety of school-based support
    staff, 126 K-5 students, fully costumed,
    performed three times in El Sereno Middle School
    on Friday and Saturday evenings, June 6th and
    7th. Principal Treptow served as director,
    choreographer and musical talent.

  • Delores Manrique and the students from Loreto
    Elementary. On June 7th, the 4th grade team form
    Loreto won a silver medal for conceptual
    understanding, a gold medal for problem
    solving,and a gold medal overall. All three
    teams (Loreto, Ford and Hollenbeck) who attended
    the County Math Field Day make Local District 5
    proud. Special thank you also to Sofia Freire
    and the Roosevelt community for hosting the
    Annual LD5 Math Day on April 26th.
