Title: The GeneSyS Project

1
The GeneSyS Project
  • An Introduction to the
  • Generic Systems
  • Supervision Project

2
Introduction
  • Information Society Project (IST-2001-34162)
funded by the European Union's Fifth RTD
    Framework Programme
  • 2.5 year project, started in March 2002
  • Cost 2.61 million
  • Partners EADS-ST, NAVUS, HLRS, MTA SZTAKI

3
Goals
  • Our mission is to enhance distributed systems and
applications with a generic and standardised
supervision solution and nurture its practical
implementation and multi-sector exploitation as a
key enabler for the competitiveness of European
    research and industry.

4
Objectives of GeneSyS
  • To specify and develop an open, generic, modular
and comprehensive supervision concept a new
    supervision middleware
  • To integrate and validate this supervision
    structure within various industrial contexts
  • To achieve the adoption of the GeneSyS concepts
by all stakeholders (internal and external to the
consortium), and to ensure that the vision of the
proposed generic structure will become a new
    emerging standard.

5
GeneSyS Architecture new supervision middleware
6
Validation Scenarios
  • Relevant and realistic scenarios based on real
user-cases of the industry will support the
validation process. They will be inspired by
    several complementary industrial domains
  • Distributed simulation
  • to validate the capability of GeneSyS to monitor
    and control interconnecting, complex and
    heterogeneous simulation facilities in real-time
  • Distributed engineering
  • to validate the capability of GeneSyS to support
    Collaborative Engineering applications (
    including design selection, project review,
    GroupWare tools,)
  • Web Servers Monitoring
  • to validate the implementation of GeneSyS in
    this very popular domain

7
Dissemination, exploitationand standardisation
  • Free download of the components developed so far,
    documentation and several dissemination material
can be found on the GeneSyS Web site
    http//genesys.sztaki.hu
  • In order to facilitate the adoption of GeneSyS by
a wide range of users, our policy is to release
our components in open source (available at
    http//sourceforge.net/projects/genesys-mw)
  • In parallel, standardisation activities are
performed by the Project partners in order to
rise GeneSyS to the level of a reference product
in the field of distributed systems supervision

8
Partners
  • Project coordinator
  • 100 subsidiary of the EADS N.V. group, the
European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company
  • Since 1994, EADS-ST has included the Distributed
Simulation technologies in its key strategies of
    research
  • EADS-ST will mainly behave as User by validating
the GeneSyS product in front of its training and
engineering applications in the space domain.

9
Partners -
  • NAVUS, founded in 1995 is a software development
company for technical and scientific applications
  • NAVUS did a number of projects for GIS, military
and medical research applications between 1995
and 2000. In 2000, NAVUS expanded its activities
to Internet based solutions and focused on Java
technology, using J2EE as a perfect platform for
    distributed applications.
  • NAVUSs contribution to the GeneSyS project
includes the specification of the middleware
architecture and the lead of the development
    activities.

10
Partners -
  • HLRS - Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum Stuttgart is
the first German National Supercomputer Centre
and worked for a long time in collaborative
    systems including complex simulation processes
  • HLRS will provide a technology oriented and
    state-of-the-art knowledge on processes,
    networking and standardisation aspects, as
crucial for the definition of advanced and
effective software services for the GeneSyS
    Architecture.

11
Partners - DSD
  • MTA SZTAKI is the largest institute of the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences for research and
development in the fields of computer sciences
    and automation.
  • DSD (Dept. of Distributed Systems) is involved in
the development of groupware applications digital
    library systems and audio/video conferencing
    environments.
  • MTA SZTAKI/DSD leads groupware and dissemination
    standardisation related activities in GeneSyS.
